  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing • What it is • What it is not • What it will do • Receiving your anointing
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • Anoint: – From dictionary.com • Verb: to rub or sprinkle on; apply an unguent, ointment, or oily liquid to; to consecrate or make sacred in a ceremony that includes the token applying of oil – Word origin & history: • c.1300, Old French enoint “smeared on” • Latin, inunguere “on + to smear” View slide

  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • So, what is the Anointing? • Simply put,… – It is recognition that you have been authorized to do • Not so simply put,… – It is recognition, commission, separation, ordination, sanctification, authorization to do what it is you have been graced or gifted or called to do; and that by the application of an unguent or ointment or oil from your church leadership to perform a specific task or role.
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • “Authorized” is an interesting word. – It means given or endowed with authority; duly sanctioned. • “Authority” means … – Having or being the power of the originator. • “Author” means … – The maker, the creator, the originator of a thing; someone who is the source.
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • The Anointing carries with it the power of the source. – You carry all of the power, force, and authority of the one anointing you. • If your anointing was by the hand of Man, … – Then you have all of the authority they can or will give you – If those anointing you are powerless – unable to back up what they have bestowed – then the anointing is powerless. • If your anointing was by the Holy One of Israel, … – Then your anointing is backed by a pretty good source. – And nothing … no thing … can remove it.
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • Anointed as High Priest • Anointed for sole service to God • Anointed to lead • Anointed to act
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • Anointed as High Priest – Aaron and his sons, the descendants of Jacob’s son Levi, were set apart by anointing for priestly service to God (YHWH) to minister specifically to God in the Tabernacle of Meeting and later in the Temple. • Exodus 29:7,9 – Then you shall take the anointing oil, and pour it on his (Aaron) head and anoint him. – Aaron and his sons shall have the priesthood by a perpetual statute. So you shall ordain (fill the hand of) Aaron and his sons. • Exodus 40:13-15 – And you shall put the holy garments on Aaron and anoint him and consecrate him, that he may minister as a priest to Me (YHWH). And you shall bring his sons and put tunics on them; and you shall anoint them even as you have anointed their father, that they may minister as priests to Me (YHWH); and their anointing shall qualify (be for them) a perpetual priesthood throughout their generations.
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • Anointed for sole service to God (YHWH) – All the implements, tools, and furniture were anointed for use in the Tabernacle or Temple • Exodus 30:25 – And you shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil. And with it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, and the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the laver and its stand. You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall be holy.
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • The altars, furniture, and utensils were anointed for sole service in the Tabernacle of Meeting as instruments for God. • The anointing consecrated them, and they were now holy. • These items were to be used for no other purpose. • They were separated apart for use in God’s service.
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • Anointed to lead – Saul was anointed King of Israel • 1 Samuel 9:27, 10:1 – Samuel said to Saul, “Say to the servant that he might go ahead of us and pass on, but you remain standing now, that I may proclaim the word of God to you.” – Then Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it on his (Saul) head, and kissed him and said, “Has not the LORD anointed you a ruler over His inheritance?”
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • Anointed to lead – David was anointed King of Israel • 1 Samuel 16:12, 13 – So he (Jesse) sent and brought him (David) in. Now he (David) was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is he.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him (David) in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward.
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • Anointed to lead – Solomon was anointed King of Israel • 1 Kings 1:38,39 – So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon. Zadok the priest then took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!”
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • In the days before Samuel, there were judges in Israel and YHWH God was Lord over Israel. • But in the days of Samuel, the people of Israel cried out for a king like all the other nations. After reasoning with the people of Israel God relented and anointed them a leader, a king like the other nations around them. • God commanded Samuel to anoint Saul then David as kings of Israel. • Zadok, as the priest of God, anointed Solomon king of Israel after David.
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • Anointed to act – Jesus was anointed by God to fulfill the role of Christ • Luke 4:17-21 – And the book (scroll) of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him (Jesus). And He opened the book (scroll), and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are downtrodden, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.” – And He (Jesus) closed the book (scroll), and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed upon Him (Jesus). And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing (ears).”
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • Anointed to ACT • Jesus, the son of Mary, was anointed by the Holy Spirit at the baptism of John in the Jordan River. • Luke 3:21,22 – Now it came about when all the people were baptized, that Jesus also was baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him (Jesus) in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “Thou art My beloved Son, in Thee I am well pleased.”
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is • Anointed to ACT • Quoting the word of God to the prophet Isaiah*, Jesus said the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, was on Him (Jesus) because He was anointed to preach good news, heal, set free, build up, and proclaim the jubilee of God. • Jesus was anointed to do. * Isaiah 61:1,2a
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it is not It is important to know what the 'anointing' is not as it is to know what the anointing is. Anointing authorizes to do. It ordains, separates or appoints to the task. It is not the task or power behind the task. • The “Anointing” is not the thing for which you were “anointed.” • The “Anointing” is not the power or authority for which you were “anointed.” • The “Anointing” is not a thing to be desired to have in vain. • The “Anointing” is not a thing lightly given or given away. • The “Anointing” is not a thing to be coveted. (For more clarity, substitute ’anointing’ with commissioning, sanctioning, or authorizing in each of the bullets.)
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it will do • The anointing teaches you. • The anointing shows God’s approval and sanction. • The anointing sets you apart • The anointing commissions you
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it will do • The anointing teaches you • 1 John 2: 20, 27 – You have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. – The anointing which you received from Him (the Holy Spirit) abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it (His anointing) has taught you, abide in Him.
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it will do • The anointing shows God’s approval and sanction for what it is He wants you to do with Him. – Aaron and his sons were approved and sanctioned to minister to God in the Tabernacle • Exodus 29.21; Exodus 40.15; Leviticus 8.12, 30 – Moses anointed everything in the Tabernacle to be holy • Leviticus 8.10 – To be empowered to oversee His possession (King Saul) • 1 Samuel 10.1 – To be empowered to greatness (King David) • 1 Samuel 16.13 – To be sanctioned and sealed in your role given to you (Solomon) • 1 Kings 1.39 – To teach you and to abide in Him • 1 John 2.27
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it will do • The anointing sets you apart for a specific task or duty. • Isaiah 61.1 – “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to…” • Acts 13:2,3 – While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: What it will do • The anointing commissions you do that which GOD has called you to do. • Jesus was and is the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed Salvation of God’s people. – Jesus received the Holy Spirit at the Jordan with His cousin John then went about doing that for which He was anointed. • Acts 10:38 – You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed by the devil; for God was with Him.
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: Receiving your anointing • How do I know what it is I am called to do? • That’s simple… – What comes to you easily? – What really drives you? – What do you feel the most passionate about?
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: Receiving your anointing • Pray for wisdom • Pray to receive the Holy Spirit’s guidance • Be willing to walk in that for which you are anointed
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: Receiving your anointing • When you pray [asking from your lower position to a higher one] – Believe you receive – Doubt not in your heart [the center, the core of your being] – Accept that those things for which you ask you receive
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing: Receiving your anointing • Be willing to walk in that for which you are anointed • Have your pastor or church leadership pray over you to receive an anointing from the Holy Spirit for those areas of your life where you are graced or gifted. • Once you have received the “Anointing” you are “Anointed.” – You are now empowered to act! – Walk in that for which you were “Anointed.”
  • davidjrogersministries@live.com ††† Jesus is Lord! The Anointing of Power and Fire • Luke 3:16 – John answered, “As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to unite the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” – (Matthew 3:11; Mark 1:8; John 1:33) • John 20:21,22 – Jesus therefore said to them, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” • Acts 1:5 – (Jesus saying) “… for John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit…) • Acts 2:2-4 – And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent, rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. • Power to witness: – Acts 1:8 “… you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” Bible verses used, unless marked otherwise, are from the New American Standard Bible (NAS).
