  3. 3. SMOKING IN FILMS BY HEROES AND HEROINES ENCOURAGES YOUNG PEOPLE TO SMOKE. A STUDY OF A SAMPLE OF 395 BOLLYWOOD FILMS MADE BETWEEN 1991 –2002 REVELS THAT 76.5%POTRAYED TOBACCO USE. FILMS ENCOURAGING MILLIONS OF YOUNG TO INTIATE SMOKING. UNION HEALTH MINISTER SAID BAN ALL SMOKING RELATED SCENES IN MOVIES . REQUESTED THE ACTORS NOT TO ACT IN THE SMOKING SCENE. BAN ON SMOKING ON BOTH AND SMALL SCREENS WILL COME INTO EFFECT FROM OCT 2 MAHATHMA GANDHI’S ANNIVERSARY.

MORE THAN 80 PER CENT OF LUNG CANCERS ARE CAUSED BY SMOKING. AMONG SMOKERS,THE RISK OF DEVELOPING LUNG CANCER IS 23 TIMES HIGHER FOR MEN13 TIMES HIGHER FOR WOMEN COMPARED WITH NON-SMOKERS.

SMOKING IS ALSO THE MAJOR PREVENTABLE CAUSE OF MACULAR DEGENERATION, A CONDITION WHICH CAUSES BLURRED CENTRAL VISION SMOKER ARE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO HEARING LOSS DUE TO EAR INFECTIONS AND LOUD NOISE. SMOKERS MAY ALSO BE MORE LIKELY TO LOSE THEIR HEARING EARLIER. THIS IS DUE TO THE DAMAGING EFFECTS OF SMOKING ON BLOOD VESSELS, WHICH CAN REDUCE BLOOD FLOW TO THE INNER EAR. SMOKING AROUND CHILDREN CAN INCREASE THEIR RISK OF EAR INFECTIONS. .
  11. 11. SMOKING CAN REDUCE SENSE OF SMELL CAUSE CANCER OF NASAL CAVITY AND NASAL SINUS. SMOKING WEAKENS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM ALLOWS DAMAGE TO THE HAIR ROOTS. PREMATURE HAIR LOSS. .
  12. 12. SMOKING IS ASSOCIATED WITH AN INCREASED RISK OF DEVELOPING 5 TIMES FOR CANCER OF THE KIDNEYS AND BLADDER. SMOKING CONTRIBUTES TO THE REDUCTION IN BONE DENSITY AMONG WOMEN INCREASES THE RISK OF HIP FRACTURE IN BOTH OLDER MEN AND WOMEN. ACUTE MYELOID LEUKAEMIA, WHICH IS A TYPE OF CANCER OF THE BONE MARROW HAS RECENTLY BEEN FOUND TO BE STRONGLY ASSOCIATED WITH SMOKING.

SMOKING CAN CAUSE 7 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO GET CANCER OF THE MOUTH, SALIVARY GLANDS AND PHARYNX; 12 TIMES FOR CANCER OF THE THROAT; VOICE BOX (LARYNX), FOOD PIPE (OESOPHAGUS). AT LEAST 50 PER CENT OF THESE CANCERS ARE CAUSED BY SMOKING.
  14. 14. SMOKING INCREASES RISK OF *STOMACH ULCER *3 TIMES FOR CANCER OF THE STOMACH *HEARTBURN *STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT BOWEL, RECTAL AND LIVER CANCERS ARE ALL MORE COMMON IN PEOPLE WHO SMOKE. *SMOKING CAN ALSO AFFECT YOUR LIVER, *CANCER OF THE PANCREAS
  15. 15. SMOKERS’ SKIN OFTEN HAS A DRY, IRRITATED, DISCOLOURED, LEATHERY, OR WORN APPEARANCE. WRINKLES, ESPECIALLY AROUND THE EYES AND MOUTH, DEVELOP SOONER INCREASE RISK OF SKIN CANCER. MANY SMOKERS DEVELOP YELLOW DISCOLOURATION OF THEIR HANDS AND FINGERNAILS DUE TO THE TAR IN CIGARETTES
  16. 16. SMOKING INCREASES THE RISK OF CERVICAL CANCER IN WOMEN, INCREASED RISK OF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION (GETTING OR MAINTAINING AN ERECTION) IN MEN.
