  2. 2. INTRODUCTION <ul><li>In English, there is a need to use longer sentences. </li></ul><ul><li>It is not always possible to write in simple sentences: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>E.g. I had dinner. I went out. I went to the cinema. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Need to join sentences together: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Compound sentences </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Complex Sentences </li></ul></ul>

COMPOUND SENTENCE <ul><li>A compound sentence normally contains 2 or more main clauses. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A clause: A group of words comprising of subject, verb, object (optional), complement (optional), adverbial (optional). </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>I feel tired occasionally. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Each clause is independent and makes complete sense by itself: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>E.g I felt sick but I did not see a doctor . </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>E.g. He hit me and I fell down . </li></ul></ul>

COMPLEX SENTENCES <ul><li>Complex sentences contain a main clause and a subordinate clause. </li></ul><ul><li>A subordinate clause does not make complete sense by itself: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Try not to talk while you are eating . </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>I went ahead with the plan despite my misgivings . </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>He was scolded because of his conduct. </li></ul></ul>
