  • HP offers a whole range of disk-based backup products that can help organizations meet their data protection challenges. You probably already know that moving the front line of data protection from tape to disk reduces administrative overhead. Daily backup becomes entirely automated and involves no tape handling, giving better backup reliability and less worry. But most companies measure the success of a data protection system by how quickly and completely they can restore data when needed. As I mentioned earlier, HP has chosen two different types of deduplication for its disk-based backup products to meet the needs of different customers. As you can see, the majority of the product range now includes data deduplication. At the entry level, we offer the D2D100 series Backup System. These 100-series products – including the latest D2D130 Backup System – was introduced last year to meet the needs of small businesses. This is a low-cost solution that does not incorporate deduplication technology. The new members of our D2D Backup System family are the D2D2500 and D2D4000 series. The D2D2500 is well suited for remote and branch offices and small IT environments, while the more powerful D2D4000 is designed for medium-sized companies and small data centers. These products include HP Dynamic deduplication, which is designed with low cost and flexibility in mind to meet the needs of smaller IT environments. HP Virtual Library Systems, which have been around for a couple of years, are known for their easy integration, simple management and fast restores. The VLS6000, VLS9000 and VLS12000 EVA Gateway are designed for medium to large-scale enterprises. They now feature Accelerated deduplication, available by license, to deliver the best backup performance and scalability for high-availability data center environments. We’ll now go on to look at Accelerated deduplication and Dynamic deduplication in more detail.

But also, what users want to do is make that application mobile. They want to apply their resources to that application where it is needed.   • Objective: To showcase some typical customer ways of implementing virtualization today Notes: Each of these is an example of virtualization in action. For example: 50% of HP servers ship with high availability software, and can be integrated with virtualization to optimize utilization using the VSE, within a datacenter or across geographies 60% of HP high-end servers use hardware partitions for running multiple applications in the same server with a high level of isolation – e.g. a production and development environment. 35-40% of HP high-end servers use virtual partitions to run multiple applications with a higher level of granularity Many customers run multiple instances of the same application in a single OS image. For infrastructures with growing workloads, capacity can be turned on automatically, when needed through Instant Capacity processors. Temporary Instant Capacity processors can also be activated where there is a high level of fluctuation in the system’s workload. I am sure you use at least 1 if not 2 to 3 of these solutions today – the real benefit lies in integration to achieve the ultimate flexibility in the most cost-effective way.

  • RAID Level 3, 10, 50
    • RAID Level 3 combines striping and parity, but it puts all the parity information on a separate parity disk. The result is an array that is especially poor at random writes and only so-so on random reads, therefore poorly suited for transactional applications. Where RAID-3 shines is in sequential reads and, to a lesser extent, in sequential writes. In fact, it's actually faster than RAID-5 on sequential reads and writes, and nearly as fast as RAID-0 (striping), with the advantage of data protection. This means that in applications where large files comprise all of the workload, RAID-3 is a good choice. Applications working with large files that require high transfer performance with redundancy, especially serving or editing large files: multimedia, publishing and so on. RAID 3 is often used for the same sorts of applications that would typically see the use of RAID 0, where the lack of fault tolerance of RAID 0 makes it unacceptable.
    • RAID Level 10 (1+0): Mirroring and striping without parity. : The most popular of the multiple RAID levels, RAID 10 combines the best features of striping and mirroring to yield large arrays with high performance in most uses and superior fault tolerance. RAID 10 is a stripe across a number of mirrored sets. RAID 10 has been increasing dramatically in popularity as hard disks become cheaper and the four-drive minimum is legitimately seen as much less of an obstacle. RAID 10 provides better fault tolerance and rebuild performance than RAID 01. It provides very good to excellent overall performance by combining the speed of RAID 0 with the redundancy of RAID 1 without requiring parity calculations.
    • RAID Level 50 forms a large array by combining the block striping and parity of RAID 5 with the straight block striping of RAID 0. RAID 50 improves upon the performance of RAID 5 through the addition of RAID 0, particularly during writes. It also provides better fault tolerance than the single RAID level does.

  • MSA2000fc DC-power chassis (LFF and SFF SKUs) With the launch of the MSA2300fc G2 controller, HP will provide two optional DC-powered controller-less chassis with two 48 V DC Power Supply Units (PSU). These chassis are identical to their AC-powered counterparts in accommodating either one or two MSA2300fc G2 controllers and the SFF and LFF drives appropriate for the drive bays. The LFF chassis can also become a LFF JBOD. Investigations are underway but no claims are made as to potential NEBS compliancy and/or certification.
