  • Goals & Post High School Education (including uni myths), and general stuff to think about while at school, in you spare time, and to not take your teachers for granted, Slide Notes: Adjust font sizes accordingly (28, 44), Insert Wainuiomata Emblem here, Insert clip art & film clips Presentation Purpose: A presentation to Maori High School Students, to trigger their thoughts about their opportunities after High School. Reader’s Notes: 1.The aim of the presentation is not to detail every post high school opportunity/career path in detail. This a first step approach to first make students “aware” of the opportunities. 2. Provide general educational advice 3.This presentation does have a pro university skew.
  • Ev may need to change these to fit the current criteria at each level. Importance is to set the goal, but of a far greater importance is to for yourself to map out the path to get there, then venture on that path. Emphasis about doing. Plan for both
  • Maybe insert: Michael Jordan Film Clip How many of you agree with these two statements? How many don’t like math? (If None Q.3) For how many of you is math your hardest subject? Explanation: With out a doubt everyone struggles with math (Myself). However: MATH IS TOO HARD, COMPUTERS WILL DO ALL THE WORK, IS A MINDSET YOU HAVE TO GET PAST, THE KEY: PRACTICE & PERCIVIAR. Piri Weepu: Do you think he would be an all black if he had given up after throwing a bad pass?..No… PRACTICE Michael Jordan: “I have failed over and over again in my life, that’s why I succeed.” PERCIVIAR. THE MOST IMPORTANT KEY 1.Math is based on a set of rules that will never change e.g. bedmas, (in algebra) it will never be sambed, or demabs. Remember the rules, and practice them 2.If you recognize the type of problem ½ the work is done. Then relate it to ones you’ve done in the past. Exp. Rach’s 21 st Happy Hour Vs Discounted Drinks, algebraic equation, one equation, 2 unknowns variables, one answer. Exp. Parabola Function or Quadratic Equation Even after all your trying and practice, you get 90% instead of %100, and you want to do better (which you should always strive to achieve) Don’t be whakama Ask your teachers, ask for additional help, even stay behind after school. (I did).
  • How many people believe this statement? How many don’t, and why? When it all comes down to: Math is an essential aspect in every job and employers want people with the skill to scan over a sheet of numbers and draw something from it. Company directors are not math specialists, but they do have an understanding of maths, they can look at a accounting bal sheet and cal the key pieces of information
  • How many of you agree with this statement? Reading is Important: How many of you can say they read a book & how often? (Magazines, leaflets, shopping catalogues, newspaper don’t count) Fiction Books. Reading is important, in that, the number one requirement for all job advertisements is communication skills! And how that relates to the importance of reading is that, only through reading other peoples ideas, can you begin to formulate and better communicate your own. I am not saying you should read a book everyday, what I am advocating is, “Pick up a book every once and while for fun.” It improves your vocabulary, it improves your comprehension. Poetry/Shakespeare is not easy, everyone struggles, but only by struggling with it does reading lower level material become easier.
  • Insert Art Clip. Yes university is one big party, but it does require some work. However university life is this: Some days you have no classes, Some days you will have 3 hours of class Some days max of 5 hours Schedule your classes right you will have 3 days of classes (all day) and 4 day weekend. University starts in March ends in November. School starts in Feb ends Dec. All spells a better life than High School, leaving plenty of time for partying. However got to do the work now to get there.
  • Insert clip art Some of the least brainy people I have met went to university, but what made them intelligent is that they had a goal, and they stuck to it.. Even when the got knocked down, or didn’t do as well at something (knocked down), they had the intelligence to persevere, and keep trying. Knowledge: Nothing is more achievable than if you have your mind set on it.
  • May change bullet point to I don’t want a student loan. Every entrepreneur has to invest some of their own money to start a business. Student loan is investing in your self. Exp. Student Protest March. Best part about it is, like everyone who invests you are looking a return, and your return on your future is exponential.
  • Reader’s Notes: General Words of Advice Only you can make the conscious decision to do what's best for yourself, don’t always have to follow your mates, have the courage, to do whets best for yourself in terms of your future direction in life.

  • Incentive Questions: Who can remember the # of after High School opportunities that I have outlined for you to take? What one do you most importantly DON’T take? Give me one Myth about university? Can anyone tell me if they for themselves have already decided on a path after High School (Can you tell me how you are going to get there?) Readers Notes: Teaches responsible to follow this up the next day. Importantly help the students outline the steps the student needs to take/achieve to get them to their goal (I expect not all to be able to complete the second part by themselves) It doesn’t have to be for yourself, but choose a particular occupation (surveyor, doctor, lawyer) and map out the career path to becoming a #…
