“Is social media a fad? If anything was a fad it
was the old media mass media period that was
a historical anomaly. Now we’ve gone to a more
social model super-charged by the internet.”
– Tom Standage, Oxford, 2013.

30. Strategies to keep them seperate
• You can’t keep them separate (really).
• An ‘all my own views’ disclaimer doesn’t hold water.
• You can avoid posting to the wrong account by using different platforms
to get onto them (eg. Hootsuite).
32. Develop your own strategy for being
a public sector professional online
• What do you want to achieve? Jot down five things you’d like to do.
• It’s okay to speak human (and to talk about non-work things.)
• Ask yourself the question: ‘would this break my code of conduct?’
• Ask yourself the question: ‘will this make my boss look stupid?’
• Ask yourself the question: ‘can I show this to my boss or a reporter?’
• Ask yourself the question: ‘Am I drunk?’
• Check your code of conduct and other policies.
