What is Digital4Change?Digital4Change is a collective vision focused on supporting and encouraging stronger tiesbetween technological and societal innovations. Specifically, Digital4Change aims to engagepeople to change the world through social actions, specifically using technology such as web2.0 tools.In the context of the Digital4Change vision, we support one week of events dedicated totechnological and societal innovations. In 2010, we are excited that more than 50 partnershave worked collaboratively to bring together specialists from around the world and set theDigital4Change movement in motion.Key words from the first meeting of the partners. 4

Digital4Change, the eventsDigital4Change was organized around the conference in HEC-Campus, Paris. Many othersside events have been organized by partners and others people interested in socialbusiness.The conferenceSince 2008, HEC Paris hosts the chair "Social Business / Business and Poverty", co-chaired byProfessor Muhammad Yunus and Martin Hirsch. In 2010, the school naturally welcomes itstwo co-chairs around international thinkers and activists from the social and digital worlds.The evening Digital4Change gathered the following personalities together: - Pr. Muhammad Yunus Professor Muhammad Yunus established the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh in 1983, enabling thousands of people to escape poverty with the help of microcredit. His belief that credit is a fundamental human right took shape by providing loans on terms that are suitable for poor people, along with advice on how to handle money. Today, replicas of the Grameen Bank model operate in more than 100 countries worldwide. Professor Yunus provided great help to many international advisory groups and global commissions. He is now a member of the board of the United Nations Foundation. He received many prestigious international awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize 2006.Martin Hirsch Martin Hirsch embodies the idea of modern success combining knowledge and ethics. After brilliant studies he quickly led a career dedicated to social projects. He became President of the Central Union of Emmaus Communities in 1995 and President of Emmaus France in 2002. He accepted in 2007 to join the Fillon government as « Haut Commissaire aux solidarités actives contre la pauvreté ». Martin Hirsch is always involved in social progress as his membership of the European Food Safety Authority proves it. He resigned from the government in 2010 and became the President of the Civic Service Agency. 9

Mitchell Baker She started working at Netscape Communications Corporation in 1994, where she was involved with the Mozilla project from the very beginning. After she wrote the Mozilla Public License, and became the general manager of mozilla.org. Although she was laid off in 2001, she continued to work on a volunteer basis. She eventually took up working for the Open Source Applications Foundation, but resumed working for Mozilla full time in 2005. Mitchell Baker played a major part in the creation of the Mozilla Foundation in July 2003, an independent non-profit that coordinates development of the open source Mozilla Internet application. She became its President, as well as its CEO in 2005.In 2005, Time magazine included her in its annual list of the 100 most influential people inthe world. She no longer serves as CEO, but remains very influential: in May 2009, shereceived the Woman of Vision Award.Walter De Brouwer Walter De Brouwer is the president of the Belgian chapter of Silicon Valley’s Founder Institute and the curator of TEDxBrussels. In 1996. He was one of the founders of PING (EUnet spin-off), the commercial company that came out of the European Unix Users Group. Since 2003 Walter De Brouwer is a director of the Tau Zero Foundation which recently published the state-of-the-art work The Frontiers of Propulsion Science. In 1998, De Brouwer organized the First International Conference of Quantum Information and Computation. De Brouwer is regularly featured as a futurologist. For the 20thAnniversary Report (The World in 2023) The Wall Street Journal Europe tapped the brains ofWalter De Brouwer, John Naisbitt and Shai Agassi. De Brouwer is the managing director ofBenveniste Bio, the French quantum biology lab specialized in digital EM signatures ofmolecules in aqueous solutions. 10

Florence Devouard She is the former president of Wikimedia Foundation’s advisory board. She studied at lÉcole nationale supérieure dagronomie et des industries alimentaires. She first worked in the research and development field for the French Institut national de la recherche agronomique (INRA) and for the French Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). In 2002 she got involved in the Wikimedia Foundation and became the president of the Foundation in October 2006. In 2008 she was not candidateanymore to be president of the foundation. She currently works as an independentconsultant on “online collaborative work”.Matt Flannery He is an American young innovator. He was working as a computer programmer at TiVo Inc. when he created Kiva with his wife in 2004. Kiva is a microfinance company that grants loans to low income families or students all around the world. They were inspired by a lecture given by Muhammad Yunus at Stanford Business School in 2003. Nowadays, Matt Flannery dedicates all his time to developing Kiva and managed to turn his project into one of the most important companies in microfinance, providing millions of dollars of loans all around the world.Joe Green Joe Green is the co-founder and president of Causes, the largest online platform for activism. Causes aims to empower any individual to effect positive change by leveraging their social network. Joe’s approach to building these online tools is rooted in his offline experience as a grassroots political organizer for federal, state, and local campaigns. Previously, Joe founded Essembly, a non-partisan networking site devoted to open and intelligent debate of political issues. Joe graduated from Harvard College in 2006 with a degree in Social Studies. 11

Its name is “Innov’acteurs” and thefollowing words are an extract of its innovation barometer, to be complemented in 2011. ● Diriez vous que vous apportez de la technologie dans le social ou que vous mettez du social dans de la technologie ?KOEOJe dirai que j’ai apporté de la technologie dans le social. Mais notre technologique reste assez simple. La raisonest structurelle. Les parcs informatiques des associations sont obsolètes. Les collaborateurs des associationssont souvent des séniors peu familiarisés à l’informatique. Nous ne pouvions pas mettre en place un supportinformatique trop sophistiqué. BABYLOANAu départ, Arnaud et Aurélie viennent du social. Lorsqu’ils découvrent Kiva, ils ont l’idée d’utiliser latechnologie pour réaliser leurs ambitions de microcrédit.A présent, le rapport est inversé : maintenant que la technologie est maîtrisée, c’est la nouvelle technologiedéveloppée qui devient sociale. ● Quels sont les usages solidaires et/ou technologiques que votre innovation est venue améliorer, bousculer ?KOEOLe mécénat de compétence est une pratique nouvelle dans les entreprises. Nous pensons pouvoir la valoriserpour répondre à deux problèmes critiques des employeurs : les périodes de sous-employabilités, je pensenotamment à l’activité des SSII et les séniors. Nous voulons proposer ce service comme un outil de gestion descompétences. Prenons l’exemple de la VAE –Valorisation des Acquis de l’Expérience-. La loi Sénior 2010 vaobliger les entreprises à maintenir l’emploi des plus de 55 ans. Nous pouvons dans ce cadre proposer desmissions longue durée aux séniors et organiser de façon concertée la transition de fin de carrière. Ledéploiement d’une politique de mécénat de compétence permettrait aux employeurs de maintenir unedynamique de compétence et de motivation de leurs salariés tout en bénéficiant de la déduction fiscale.Nous sommes aux prémisses de cet outil de gestion RH que nous essayons de valoriser auprès des entreprises.MAKESENSECe que nous venons changer avec Makesense, c’est la diffusion de l’information et la manière de s’impliquerdans des projets à impact social.WISEREARTHObjectif initial : créer de la visibilité pour les actions de terrain méconnues du grand public, encourager lacollaboration et la création de partenariats[…] ● Innovation sociale et réplicabilité: seriez vous prêts à partager votre technologie / modèle avec d’autres acteurs pour en multiplier l’impact? Votre business model vous le permet-il? Sous quelles conditions ?KOEOJe viens de faire une conférence à Monaco sur la réplicabilité de notre modèle à l’international. Il y a despossibilités, mais c’est compliqué car les lois fiscales varient d’un pays à un autre.A l’étranger notre business model n’existe pas. Il y a des petits sites de mécénat de compétence souvent à uneéchelle régionale.En France, nous n’avons pas vraiment de concurrent. Passerelle & Compétence intervient sur le bénévolat decompétence, ce n’est pas la même chose. Ils sont limités aux associations de solidarité. 16

MAKESENSENotre application est open source puisqu’elle est créée sous Wordpress. Nous sommes entièrement prêts àpartager notre modèle, c’est pour cela que nous avons choisi l’open source ! D’ailleurs, à terme, le vrai objectif,c’est que les autres se saisissent du projet !WISEREARTHEn 2008, le Biomimicry Institute a financé l’accès à SourceForge pour WiserEarth. L’ensemble de la plateformeest ainsi un logiciel libre, dont le contenu est ouvert à tous […] “Le partage fait avancer” (Coopportunity, JohnGrant)BABYLOANNon, pas de logique d’open source. Gros investissement de départ pour un développement sur-mesure.Partager cet outil représenterait une trop grande mise en danger pour Babyloan.Cependant, maintenant que l’outil est arrivé à maturation, il serait envisageable d’en partager certainesfonctionnalités : mise à disposition ou vente de la technologie à prix très réduit, marque blanche pour desmicrosites destinés aux entreprisesLe P2P n’est rentable que si le modèle fonctionne à grande échelle (effet de taille critique). Les ressources sontlimitées, il faut donc préserver la technologie. ● Pourquoi selon vous les nouvelles technologies et le web 2.0 peuvent-ils être l’avenir de la solidarité ?BABYLOANPas tout à fait d’accord. Babyloan utilise beaucoup les réseaux sociaux mais finalement ce n’est pas l’outil decommunication le plus efficace : 50% des collectes provient des médias classiques, 20% du bouche-à-oreille etle reste vient de l’événementiel et des médias sociaux.Le web seul ne suffit pas. Plus les réseaux sociaux grossissent, plus on constate une perte d’efficacité etd’actions réelles. 2. Results of the GirlzInWeb surveyGirlzInWeb is a French association, created in 2009, who gather women working in thedigital world together… a world that seems to be a men’s world! Indeed, the 4 girls whocreated the association made the observation that there was no girl in conferencesprograms. Was it because they were bad at talking about digital? No, they were just invisibleto organizers. Therefore, GirlzInWeb decided to highlight women in digital and to make themexpress more and more, to be detected as an expert.To celebrate its first birthday and its 1500 fans on Facebook, GirlzInWeb submitted a surveywhich results are presented in the following pages. These results have been presentedduring the Digital4Change side event at La Cantine Numérique. Here are some figurespresented during this event and from the survey.This survey is about girls expectations from the associations. It reveals than they mostly needto develop their network activities in order to be at the right place at the right moment andtake the good jobs. Digital4Change InspirationDigital4Change ChannelFrom the beginning of the D4C week until today, Digital4change inspires reflections andactions. The first of them is the channel http://digital4change.tv/accueil, a web TV whereare discussed the following subjects: - How NTIC can help companies to improve their social environmental and ecological footprint? - Finances and solidarity, what is going to change? - Open source, a useful tool for solidarity action? - Will geeks change the world? The channel is offered by Techtoc.tv and Webcastory which founders feel close to the Digital4Change movement. Green Innovation BarcampWhat is a barcamp? BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people toshare and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, andinteraction from attendees. Its mission is tofacilitate the development of projects which introduce new practices for the improvement ofsociety live together.On December the 7th, the side event was different from everyday meetings: this was anaccelerator projects, sponsored by SFR.The meeting was presented with these words:60 attendees with different skills (researchers, entrepreneurs, start-ups, artists, collectives,designers, innovators, etc...) will be positioned around a promoter of social innovation inthree sessions that will try to help one of them. Participants come to understand the socialinnovation hold by the emerging projects in order to help their development to go faster.Each participant makes a proposition " to holders: a study or a paper, a formal relationship, abeta-test, a further brick, a partnership, a forum, support for promotion, etc.. Breaks arescheduled between sessions to further promote exchanges and collaborations. A final reportis produced and gave to participants. Example of the rules of the accelerator projects - « Respectez le timing et le temps de parole de chacun, 45 minutes, cest très court ! - Soyez critique si vous le souhaitez, mais constructif, toujours ! - La tentation sera grande de dériver et parler de fractures numériques, monnaies libres ou de la stratégie de Google … - Cest possible, mais … pendant les pauses ! Lors des ateliers, restez centré sur le projet. - Dites "Stop, jai pas compris! " si un terme jargonneux vous échappe : cest aussi rendre service au porteur de projet ! - Faites des propositions au porteur, sans complexe. Wisertuesday special D4CWisertuesday is a recurrent meeting, organized by WiserEarth, the social network forSustainability. The subject was governance in emerging projects. The discussion was dividedin two groups, and each one reveals its own governance definition thought digital issues. Themain question was: “Can you imagine governance for social innovation?”More than answers, news questions appeared and stimulated the participants to discuss andwrite. Mais le prix Nobel de la Paix et le fondateur de laplateforme de microcrédit Kiva participeront aussi tous deux à la semaine dédiée auxinnovations technologiques et sociétales, qui a lieu du 1er au 9 décembre.Ils se rendront à HEC le 9 décembre, aux cotés entre autres de Florence Devouard, ancienneprésidente du conseil dadministration de la Wikimedia foundation, à la journée organisée àHEC (Campus de Jouy-en-Josas).Ces intervenants tenteront de répondre à une question: en quoi les nouvelles technologiespeuvent-elles répondre sur le terrain à des besoins sociaux, comme la lutte contre lapauvreté ou lexclusion?Cette journée mettra fin à une semaine riche en événements pour le secteur du socialbusiness »Matt Flannery’s interview by YouphilMatt Flannery est le co-fondateur de Kiva, un portail de microfinance. Matt Flannery (en photo ci-dessous) joue quand même son rôle de "star" de la microfinance. Le co- fondateur de Kiva, le premier portail de microcrédit dans le monde, donne laccolade et accepte, un peu gêné, dêtre pris en photo. Le teint hâlé, arrivé tout droit de San Francisco, où se trouve le siège de lONG, il est à Paris pour assister à lévénement Digital4Change. Il vient présenter sa plateforme, un exemple dinnovation technologique au service du social. Loccasion de "retrouver Muhammad Yunus, celui qui (l)’a inspiré"."En 2004, il est venu donner une conférence sur la microfinance à l’Université de Standfordoù j’étudiais. C’est la première fois que j’entendais parler de microfinance. Cela correspondaitexactement à mon souhait de devenir un entrepreneur et d’avoir un impact socialimportant", explique-t-il. Cet homme de 33 ans part alors faire un volontariat en Ougandaavec Jessica, sa compagne de l’époque et co-fondatrice de Kiva, pour rencontrer desentrepreneurs locaux. 29

Innovation technologique et sociale"J’avais cette idée de lever de l’argent via Internet pour aider ces entrepreneurs", affirme-t-il,mû par une profonde envie d’apporter sa contribution.De retour à San Francisco, son enthousiasme convainc son entourage de se lancer dans cetteaventure, afin de répondre aux besoins des plus démunis à lautre bout du monde."J’étais sûr que les gens ne pourraient pas résister à l’envie d’aider les autres, assure-t-il unsourire accroché à son visage poupon. Mais j’ai aussi un fort pouvoir de persuasion". "Non,samuse Skylar Woodward, membre de Kiva installé en France depuis quelques mois. Ilinsiste tellement qu’on est obligés de dire oui!". Les deux amis s’esclaffent dans les locaux defaberNovel, une agence au service de linnovation située place de la République à Paris, oùune centaine de personnes sont réunies, mercredi 8 décembre, pour fêter les cinq ans deKiva.Un premier site Internet est alors lancé, sur le principe d’un marché boursier… "Mais ça n’apas marché" avoue Matt Flannery. Ce Californien aux 1.000 idées a donc imaginé Kiva, etSkylar Woodward l’a mis en place.En octobre 2005, Kiva, le premier site Internet de microfinance, est lancé. Le principe estsimple: un internaute peut prêter 25 dollars au minimum à un entrepreneur dans le besoinsitué à lautre bout du monde, en passant par des Institutions de Microfinance sur place. Legénie de Matt Flannery a été de montrer les visages et les histoires des emprunteurs, tout envalorisant les prêteurs, qui se rendent mieux compte de limpact de leur action. "Internetrend le monde plus petit et fait en sorte que la générosité n’ait plus de frontières, analyseMatt Flannery. Le web est le reflet des comportements humains". Longtemps parti à larencontre des bénéficiaires, Matt Flannery intervient maintenant dans les universités etauprès de prêteurs pour expliquer et sensibiliser au sort des plus défavorisés, qu’ils soient àl’autre bout du monde ou au coin de la rue. "J’aime éduquer les gens à la pauvreté, à la viedans le tiers-monde. Expliquer comment est la vie en dehors de notre communauté", admet-il, convaincu que le prêt est une solution plus adaptée que le don.Les énergies renouvelables, prochaine étape?Motivé par les histoires de ces personnes, il prête "tout le temps. Mais le problème c’est quenous sommes trop vite remboursés!", lâche-t-il. Victime de son succès, Kiva accueille en effet500.000 prêteurs pour quelque 300.000 emprunteurs. Sur le site, il y a un prêt toutes les 10secondes. Kiva a par ailleurs levé 75 millions de dollars en 2010 et 190 millions depuis sonlancement. Depuis quelques mois, lONG propose des prêts pour les exclus du systèmebancaire dans les pays occidentaux, qui souhaitent monter leur petite entreprise. Enseptembre, le leader de la microfinance sur Internet s’est également lancé dans les prêtsétudiants dans les pays en développement."La prochaine étape serait de proposer des microcrédits pour les énergies renouvelables.J’aimerais qu’on investisse plus dans l’environnement", glisse cet utopiste, qui souhaite àterme, pourquoi ne pas, se séparer des Institutions de Microfinance pour prêter directementaux particuliers. Car le monde selon Matt Flannery semble parfois bien éloigné de la réalité. 30

En Inde, la microfinance subit un revers. Les déboires de SKS, une institution demicrofinance, entachent le secteur.Comment voit-il lavenir, dans 15 ans? "Des milliards de dollars auront été prêtés via Kiva".Un moyen d’éradiquer la pauvreté? Peut-être pas. Mais un moyen d’améliorer la vie decentaines de personnes, certainement ». 31
