Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time – Gospel - Mark 10:2-16 - Presentation Transcript

    1. “ Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery”
      • 2 And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”
      • 3 He answered them, “What did Moses command you?”
      • 4 They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to put her away.”
      • 5 But Jesus said to them, “For your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.
      • 6 But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’
      • 7 ‘ For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,
      • 8 and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh.
      • 9 What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder.”
      • 10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter.

      • 11  And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery against her;
      • 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
      • 13 And they were bringing children to him, that he might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them.
      • 14 But when Jesus saw it
      • he was indignant, and said to them, “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God.
      • 15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”
      • 16 And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands upon them.

    2. 10: 1-9 Marriage and Divorce
      • The Pharisees wanted Jesus to give a self-incriminating answer that would provoke opposition to Him.
      • Perhaps He would contradict Deuteronomy 24: 1-4 .
      • All Pharisees agreed that this Old Testament passage
        • permitted divorce, that
        • only the husband could initiate it, and that
        • divorce implied the right to remarry.
      • They disagreed on the grounds of divorce.
      • The strict view of Rabbi Shammai allowed divorce only if a wife were guilty of adultery.
      • Rabbi Hillel allowed a husband to divorce his wife for almost any reason.
      • If Jesus took sides in this dispute He would divide His followers.
      • Even today people are argue over the same issue.
      • Maybe Jesus’ position would offend Herod Antipas as John the Baptist had done (cf. 6: 17-19 ).
      • Then He would be arrested since He was under Herod’s jurisdiction in Perea.
      • Jesus asked, “ 3 What did Moses command you?”
      • The real question is what did Moses allow?
      • “ 4 Moses permitted him to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her.”
      Moses
    3. 10: 4 Why Then Did Moses Permit Divorce?
      • Moses instituted laws to protect women.
      • Under Jewish law, only a husband could initiate and carry out a divorce.
      • The civil laws protected the victims of the divorce.
      • Because of Moses’ law, a man could no longer just throw his wife out—he had to write a formal letter of dismissal.
      • The certificate of divorce , meant that she could remarry and reclaim her dowry .
      • This was a radical step toward civil rights, for it made a man think twice before sending his wife away.
      • Moses’ law gave protection to the wife and limited abuses of divorce.
    4. 10: 13-16 Blessing of the Children
      • Jesus was often criticized for spending too much time with the wrong people—children, tax collectors, and sinners.
      • Some, including the disciples, thought Jesus should be spending more time with important leaders and the devout, because this was the way to improve his position and avoid criticism.
      • He was God, and he wanted to speak to those who needed him most.
