Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time - Hebrews 10:11-14, 18 - Presentation Transcript
For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.
11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,
13 then to wait until his enemies should be made a stool for his feet.
14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.
18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
The Holy Bible : Revised Standard Version Second Catholic edition (2006), with the ecclesiastical approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Thomas Nelson Publishing for Ignatius Press.
In this reading we have a contrast between the Jewish High Priest and Christ the High priest.
The Jewish High Priest was a foreshadowing of the true High Priest, Jesus.
The Jewish High Priest made offerings for the people but they were ineffective compared to total self donation of Jesus.
The Jewish High Priest offered the blood that was not his own but blood of a sacrificed victim.
Jesus, on the other hand, offered his own blood for the salvation of many.
The Jewish High Priest entered the tent of meeting.
Christ entered heaven.
The Jewish High Priest offered sacrifice for the Israelites alone.
Christ offered the sacrifice of his sinless body for the sins of the world.
The Jewish High Priest was seen as a intercessor for the people.
Christ is the intercessor for the entire world.
The sacrifice of an animal effectively brought legal purification (Hebrews 9:13),
How much more effective is the blood of the sinless, divine Christ who, fulfilling the will of the Father and of his own accord offered himself to purge the human race of sin and render it fit for the service of God (Hebrews 9:14).
