    Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Second Reading – Hebrews 5:1-6 - Presentation Transcript

    1. High priest: called by God to offer sacrifices for self and others. So Christ was called, “You are my son. . . . a priest forever.”
      • 1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
      • 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness.
      • 3 Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people.
      • 4 And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was.
      • 5  So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;
      • 6 as he says also in another place, “You are a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchizedek.”
      The Holy Bible : Revised Standard Version Second Catholic edition (2006), with the ecclesiastical approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Thomas Nelson Publishing for Ignatius Press.
      • This is an excellent example of a High Priest job description.
      • The Jewish reader of the New Testament would already know of and may have been acquainted with a High Priest.
      • Jesus not only met but exceeded the job description in many ways.
      • Jesus had compassion for the people because He Himself experienced their problems because He was both human and divine.
      • We all have struggles, setbacks, failures, hurts pains, and problems.
      • There is only one great Physician that can heal these problems, Jesus Christ.
      • When you have a troubling illness, eventually, you go to the doctor and explain your problem.
      • The doctor gives you advice and maybe a prescription.
      • God gives you advice in the Bible and a Ten Commandment prescription.
