On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

John 20:19-20
We can picture the apostles as frightened men, hidden behind locked doors, waiting for soldiers to come and take them away.
Then all of a sudden Jesus appears and says, “Peace be to you.”
The apostles were already afraid of the Jews now they were terrified.
Jesus then shows them His wounds as proof.
Luke tells us that Jesus asked for something to eat. He ate a “piece of broiled fish.” Clearly, He was really with them, ghosts don’t eat (Lk. 24:42).

John 20:21-22
Jesus again identified himself with His Father.
He told the disciples by whose authority He did His work.
How did the Father send Jesus?
He sent Him with authority.
How does Jesus send out His Apostles?
He sends them with authority.
Jesus breathed on the Apostles.
The only other time God breathed on someone was when He breathed life into Adam.
Jesus breathed life into the Apostles and gave them the authority that the Father had given Him.

John 20:23 Forgive Sin
In order to know which sins were to be forgiven and which were to be retained, the Apostles must have heard confessions.
It is important to remember that the practice of confession to a priest was in place for centuries prior to the beginning of Protestant religions.
