Second Sunday in Ordinary Time – John 2:1-11 - Presentation Transcript

    1. John 2:1-11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee
      •  1  On the third day there was a marriage at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there;
      • 2 Jesus also was invited to the marriage, with his disciples.
      • 3 When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”
      • 4 And Jesus said
      • to her, “O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”
      • 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
      • 6 Now six stone jars were standing there, for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.
      • 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.
      • 8 He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the steward of the feast.” So they took it.
      • 9 When the steward of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know
      • where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward of the feast called the bridegroom
      • 10 and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first; and when men have drunk freely, then the poor wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.”
      • 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
      • “ O Woman,” St. Paul called Jesus the "last Adam" or the New Adam (see 1 Corinthians 15:21-22 , 45-49 ; Romans 5:14 ). And the tradition of the Church has always seen Mary as the "new Eve" (see Catechism, nos. 410-411 ).
      • As Adam called Eve "woman," we see Jesus call Mary "woman"
      • (compare Genesis 2:23 and John 2:4 ).
      • Eve disregarded God's commands, Mary offers herself freely to the will of God and says "Do whatever He tells you" (see Luke 1:38 ; John 2:5 ).
      • She is willing to accept the decision of Jesus to either help or refuse to help the couple.
      • The gospel tells us that Jesus complied with her request.
      • It is important to note that Mary’s last recorded words to the servants are: 5 “ Do whatever he tells you.”
      • We, God’s servants, would do well to follow her advice.
      • Notice also that she did not draw attention to herself but pointed the servants to Jesus.
      • Mary continues in that role.
      • There are a number of church approved Marian apparitions or appearances, and the common thread of all the apparitions is to draw humanity closer to God, not to herself.
      • God created the world and all that is in it in six days and rested on the seventh.
      • Jesus also uses seven days for the first week of “New Creation Week,”
      • (Day 1) 1:1 – John introduces Jesus 2 He was in the beginning with God; 3 all things were made through him.
      • (Day 2) 1:29, Behold the Lamb of God
      • (Day 3) 1:35, Son of God King of Israel
      • (Day 4) 1:43, The next day he found Philip
      • (Day 7) 2:1, On the third day, after the fourth day, which would be the seventh day, of the New Creation Week, there was a wedding feast at Cana, a time to rest with friends.
      • Throughout history, God has compared His Old Covenant to the marriage covenant (see Hosea 2:16-24 ; Jeremiah 2:2; Isaiah 54:4-8 ).
      • This explains why Christ described Himself as the "bridegroom" in the Gospels and performed His first miracle at a wedding (see John 2 ; 3:29 ; Mark
      • 2:19; Matthew 22:1-14 ; 25:1-13 ).
      • The New Covenant fulfills God's marital vows to His people.
      • He has become "one body" with them in the Church.
      • This covenant is renewed in each Eucharist celebration, as we are joined intimately to His Body. (see Revelation 21:3).
