    Mk 9 38 43, 45, 47 48 - Presentation Transcript

    1. Mk 9:38-43, 45, 47-48 A stranger worked miracles in your name! But whoever is not against us is for us. If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.
      • 38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he was not following us.”
      • 39 But Jesus said, “Do not forbid him; for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me.
      • 40 For he that is not against us is for us.
      • 41 For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ, will by no means lose his reward.
      • 42 “ Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone was hung round his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
      • 43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, to the unquenchable fire.
      • 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell.
      • 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell,
      • 48 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.
      • The Holy Bible : Revised Standard Version Second Catholic edition (2006), with the ecclesiastical approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Thomas Nelson Publishing for Ignatius Press.
    2. 9: 38-41 Another Exorcist
      • The disciples were jealous of a man who healed in Jesus’ name because they were more concerned with their own group’s position than in helping to free those troubled by demons.
      • People who are on Jesus’ side have the same goal of building up the Kingdom of God.
      • They should not let differences interfere with this goal.
      • Those who share a common faith in Christ should cooperate.
      • People don’t have to be just like us to be following Jesus.
    3. Ambition
      • Faith applies to what we do individually and as members of our Church Community.
      • Our thoughts and actions must be motivated by love (1 Corinthians 13), and we must be careful about judging others (Matthew 7: 1-5 ; Romans 14: 1 –15: 4 ).
      • However, we also have a responsibility to confront flagrant sin within the church (1 Corinthians 5: 12-13 ).
      • Just like the Apostles we cannot allow our personal ambitions to get in the way of building up the kingdom of God.
