John 21 1 19

After a night of fruitless fishing, the apostles see the risen Jesus. At his Word they haul in many fish. He eats with them on the shore. Then to Simon; “Do you love me? Feed my lambs.”

1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he revealed himself in this way.
2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together.
3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got
into the boat; but that night they caught nothing.
4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
5 Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any fish?” They answered him, “No.”
6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish.

7 That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea.
8 But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.
9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread.
10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.”
11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.
12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.

13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish.
14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
16 A second time he said to him, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”
17 He said to him a third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.

18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go.”
19 (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, “Follow me.”

The Risen Christ The Powerful Christ.
During His passion Jesus was beaten, He will never be beaten again.
He will never be mocked again.
He came as a sacrificial lamb who was slaughtered.
The next time Jesus comes He will come as a lion.
This scene shows Him as the risen Christ, the powerful Christ.
The religious leaders could not kill Him.
Satan could not lead Him astray.
Death could not destroy Him.
The grave could not hold Him.
Peter could not stop Him from altering the Father’s plan.

When Jesus died on the cross, when all was said and done, Peter and the rest returned to the things they used to do.
After a loved one dies don’t we do the same?
V. 6 Jesus instructs the disciples to cast their net so that they might catch fish. Also see Luke 5:4, Jesus teaching from the boat.
In both John and Luke the scene takes place at the Sea of Galilee which is another name for Sea of Tiberias.
In both instances one is reminded that the
apostles labored all night yet were unable to catch any fish but with Jesus’ help, with God’s grace, they were able to accomplish what they thought was impossible.
In Mark 10:27 we read, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”
In Luke 5:10 Jesus tells Peter that he will catching men.

Think about how often we attempt to reach our goals on our own when we should be asking is it:
God’s will,
Is it God’s timing and
Recognizing that we can’t do anything without God’s light,
Without God’s help.
In this scene we cannot help but recall the multiplication of the loaves and fish in John 6:9, and the distribution of the bread of life.
The charcoal fire serves a double purpose.
It sets the scene for Jesus’ servant role as he becomes the giver of bread and fish to the disciples.
And it was in front of a charcoal fire that Peter would deny Jesus THREE TIMES (John 18:18).
Here Jesus asks Peter if he loved him THREE times, the same number of times that Peter had denied Christ.

Everytime Peter responds to the question, Jesus assigns him the tasks of a shepherd, the leader of the flock.
Feed my lamb
Tend my sheep
Feed my sheep
Might Jesus be saying, “Peter, give up the fishing and catch men for the church?”
I don’t know that was the intent but it makes sense that it was time to begin again the evangelization that Jesus had begun.
One final thought, the apostles put down their net and
Caught fish (humankind) and brought them to
the to the bread of life (Eucharist)
that was prepared by the risen Lord.
Peter and his successors will continue Christ’s mission and work toward the salvation of all believers (cf. Jn. 6:38).
