Psalm 80:2-3, 15-16, 18-19 Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.
O shepherd of Israel, hearken, from your throne upon the cherubim, shine forth.
Rouse your power, and come to save us.
Once again, O LORD of hosts, look down from heaven, and see;
take care of this vine, and protect what your right hand has planted the son of man whom you yourself made strong.
May your help be with the man of your right hand, with the son of man whom you yourself made strong.
Then we will no more withdraw from you; give us new life, and we will call upon your name.
“ Restore us” means to restore the nation to the way things were before; but it could be understood as meaning to bring back those who were forced to flee their land.
The image of the vine planted by the Lord is explained in the Hebrew text when it refers to Israel as “the
Son whom thou has reared for thyself.”
The psalmist regards Israel as the instrument through which the power of God shows itself.
Remember salvation shall come from the Jews and Jesus was the Jew who brought us that salvation.
