    Notes on slide 1

First fruits were to be given to the Lord’s priest, if the first fruit was a child, the child could be REDEEMED (bought back) by the parents who offered a replacement offering, in this case two birds. More detail Lv. 12:1-8 Turtledoves migrate through Israel during the spring time. They are an offering of the poor. If the family could afford it, they would have offered a lamb.

      • a light for revelation to the Gentiles , and glory for your people Israel.
    4. 2: 41-52 Jesus in the Temple – 5 th Joyful Mystery
      • This was Jesus Bar Mitzvah. At this age he was now one who is bound by the commandments.
      • These verses also end of the infancy narrative
      • Luke’s infancy narrative is different from Matthew.
      • Mark & John don’t give an infancy narrative.
    5. Intercession Vs. Praying To
      • The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines praying as: to address God with adoration, confession, supplication, or thanksgiving
      • intercession is defined as: to intervene between parties with a view to reconciling differences
    6. We Don’t Pray To Mary
      • But we do ask her to intercede for us with her Son, Jesus Christ.
      • The Bible has a long history of people interceding for others.
      • Don’t we ask other people to pray for us?
      • Didn’t Mary intercede for the couple at the wedding feast at Cana?
      • Didn’t Jesus honor his mother’s intercession?
    7. Mary’s Last Words In The Bible
      • The quote comes from the Wedding Feast at Cana.
      • She addressed the servants,
      • “ Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2: 5 )
      • It was good advice then and is still good advice today.
      • Mary was and is full of faith.
      • She was Jesus’ first disciple.
    8. Where Did The Rosary Come From?
      • It is usually suggested that the rosary began as a practice by the laity to imitate the monastic Office (Breviary or Liturgy of the Hours), by which monks prayed the 150 Psalms.
      • The laity, many of whom could not read, substituted 50 or 150 Ave Marias (Hail Marys) for the Psalms.
      • Sometimes a cord with counters on it was used to keep an accurate count.
    9. St. Dominic & The Rosary
      • The first clear historical reference to the rosary, however, is from the life of St. Dominic (1170 - 1221), the founder of the Order of the Dominicans.
      • He preached a form of the rosary, in France, at the time of a heresy that was devastating the faith there.
      • Tradition has it that the Blessed Mother herself asked for the practice as an antidote for heresy and sin.
    10. Why Do We Call It The Rosary
      • Rosary means a crown of roses, a spiritual bouquet given to the Blessed Mother.
      • In English the rosary has been called "Our Lady's Psalter" or "the beads."
      • The word “beads” is derived from an Old English word for prayers (bede) and to request (biddan or bid).
    11. What have we learned
      • Mary is a historical figure.
      • She is the Mother of God.
      • She was the New Ark of the Covenant.
      • We do not pray to her but ask her to intercede for us with her son.
      • All of the Joyful mysteries of the Rosary are found in the Gospel of Luke.
      • The “Hail Mary” itself is taken from Biblical passages.
      • Mary was significant in God’s plan and her son’s life and worthy of honor.
