Biblical Women Salome - Presentation Transcript

    1. Salome Mother of James and John and the wife of Zebedee ,
      • We see the name “Salome” used twice in the New Testament, once as the daughter of Herodias and the other as the wife of Zebedee.
      • Zebedee and his sons were Galilean fishermen.
      • You will recall that Zebedee’s sons, James and John, were fishing with their father when Jesus asked them to follow Him.
      • Salome’s story can be found in Matthew 20:20-24; 27.56; and Mark 15:40-41; 16:1-2.
      • Imagine how happy Salome must have been when she realized her sons were recruited to be disciples by the Son of God and later became part of the “inner circle,” of the apostles.
      • At the transfiguration it was her sons along with Peter who heard God the Father proclaim, “This is my Son.”
      • She, too had become a follower of Christ, but like so many others, she shared the misconception that the Messiah would drive out the Romans and establish His kingdom in Palestine.
      • She saw first hand that the powerful rules and religious leaders of Jerusalem hated Jesus and wanted to destroy him.
      • King David had face the same type of hatred but overcame it and established his kingdom.
      • Most likely she would have thought that Jesus would do the same.
      • Salome had given up the comforts she had at the Sea of Galilee and the wealth that went with the fishing business to willingly follow Jesus.
      • Like all mothers of the world she wanted the best for her sons so she went to Jesus with a request that she thought would make her children happy.
      • 20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him [Jesus], with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Command that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” (Mt. 20:20-21 RSVCE)
      • But God the Father had already made the assignment of those places.
      • Imagine what went through Salome’s mind when she was at the foot of the cross and saw the pain and suffering of Jesus.
      • Surely, she would not have wanted this for her sons.
      • James was the first martyr among the apostles, having been beheaded by King Herod Agrippa (Acts 12:1, 2), A.D. 44.
      • John became the Bishop of Ephesus, and died there about A.D. 98
      • Salome taught us that we
      • need to surrender to the will of the Father and not try to impose our will on Him.
