    • Trailer Analysis By Dan Jefferies
    • What is Trailer Analysis? For this piece of work I will be looking at three separate trailers in detailand I will be looking to talk about the following things;•Editing•Lighting•Camera shot, angles, movements•Mise-en-scene•SoundFor each of these topics I will be looking to scrutinise and decode all ofthe trailers into smaller sections. I will be doing it shot by shot howeverin some occasions I will group some shots together if it is in quicksuccession.
    • Shutter Island Trailer (Part 1)Shot 1:In this shot we see a character on a boat. This is shot in a wide, long shot, with the boat sat in the centre with the boat’s mast and bow on the twohorizontal lines of the rule of thirds. The shot only lasts for two seconds andthe audience see the boat appear from the sea fog with the boat coming at Shot 3:the camera. The lighting that is used in this shot is high key/ natural lighting In this shot we see the island in a wide, long shot with the island almost, this is because the sea fog makes the shot seem darker than normal but covering the screen from side to side. This is to add emphasis on the islandbecause it is natural fog then it is natural lighting. As this shot is set looking and portray it as a big place immediately in the trailer. Over the top of thisat a boat then this immediately tells the audience that this film is going to shot there is a voiceover.be on an island. The fog around It gives an sinister effect and makes theaudience feel uneasy as it does not give away anything about the trailer just Shot 4:yet. The sound that is used in the shot is diegetic sound of the ocean In this shot we see a car move across shot in a tracking shot and is shot atwaves, this adds realism to the film trailer. There is also music which is be a high angle. By doing this it gives the effect of a security guard lookingplayed over the top. The music acts like a sound bridge and goes form shot over at the car with characters arriving to the island as the camera isto shot. In this shot the lighting may have been altered slightly to give the surrounded by barbwire and is designed to look like a security guards nestfog around the boat to give the boat a more ominous look. Also following tower. Within this shot the lighting is natural. There is only diegetic soundthis shot it then fades to black. The length of this shot is only two seconds of the car going past in this clip. In the editing process there is no speciallong. effects added to this shot and is only edited so that it transitions from the last to the next shot.Shot 2:In this shot we see the main character to the right of the shot in a close up.The character is on the right hand vertical intersection of the rule of thirds. The lighting is natural. In this scene we only actually see his facialexpression of him looking up above the camera. The editing in this trailer isvery simple and not has been changed since being shot from the rawfootage. There is also a voiceover on this clip and begins to introduce thefilm. This shot lasts just over a second.
    • Shutter Island Trailer (Part 2)Shot 1:In this shot we see the characters on board the boat that was previouslyseen. This time the characters are in a two shot with either character beingon each vertical lines of the rule of thirds. By this shot being shot in this wayit will add realism to the film trailer as a whole. The lighting that is used is Shot 3:natural lighting and will also add some realism to the trailer. Everything in In this shot there is a tracking P.O.V. shot which is designed to be anthis shot is designed to show that is exactly what would be found on a boat. establishing shot to the island gates and is designed to be a goodOnce again for the editing the film would not have done much in special introduction to the film. The lighting of this shot is once again naturaleffects but is very likely that there would have been some slight editing of lighting and is designed to make the audience to feel calm andthe lighting as when shot as raw footage and before it got to the relaxed. In this shot the camera shots the main gate with anotherconstruction stage. During this shot there is dialogue in the shot of the two gate and a building in the background. The sound that is in thischaracters talking to each the other. The start of the dialogue had began in shot is a voiceover that will eventually catch up with a later shot.the previous shot and was played over the top and sound bridged into thisshot. Shot 4: In this shot we see the characters in a mid shot with the two characters onShot 2: the outside on the two vertical lines of the rule of thirds. This is doneIn this shot the titles “A MARTIN SCORSESE PICTURE” is shown. This so that the middle character is now being seen on the protagonistshows the target audience immediately that this is directed by a big with his allies at either side. The lighting is once again natural and isdirector therefore should be another award-winning film. It will also gives done for realism. Once again there is no special effects in thethe target audience a lure to watch the film because if they like such films editing g process but the shot transitions to a small blackout and thisas “Taxi Driver” and “Goodfellas” then are likely to want to watch this too. would only be able to be done in the editing process. In this shot theThe text is shown on a black background and the font sizes are organised target audience sees the previous gate that the camera went throughso that the words “MARTIN SCORCESE” are larger than the other two and with three of the characters in the foreground.is designed to grab the audiences attention. A sound is heard in sync withthese titles coming onto screen. The sound is also designed to grab theaudiences attention as it is a low tone sound that is a complete differentpitch, tone and pace of the dialogue used in the previous shot.
    • Shutter Island Trailer (Part 3) Shot 3: In this shot the audience see a close up of a US Marshal badge. This is designed to symbolise authority and power. This shot continues from the previous and will go on the next shot. In the film this is actually the orderShot 1: that they’re in and one after another. However the shot may have beenIn this shot the audience see two guards in a mid two shot with the left hand edited by shortening the shot as the trailer has to be reduced from 138guard on the left hand vertical intersection on the rule of thirds. The minutes to 2 ½ minutes without given too much of the film away and stillmovement is a tracking shot and the movement and shot is done in such a leaving the encoded to the target audience.way that it will add realism to the trailer. The props of the rifles in this shot isdesigned to make the audience feel uneasy and on edge as these aresymbolic of power and death. There is no special effects in this shot and Shot 4:transitions from black and carries onto the next shot in the trailer without a In this shot the target audience see an officer of the island in a mid shotfade to black and instead carries on in a sequence. The sound bridge that and he is directly in the centre of the screen. This shot immediately tells thehas been on in the last couple of shots still carries in this one. audience that the marshals are not going to be in the charge of the island but the officers. The uniform that they wear is also iconic of power and authority. This shot is still a natural lighted shot and make the audience feelShot 2: at ease as it is still clear what is happening. Over the top of this shot thereIn this shot we see the two main characters once again in a two shot with is still an ominous piece of sounding music and is supposed to buildeach of the characters at the vertical intersections on the rule of thirds. In tension. There is also the dialogue of the characters.the sound department the sound bridge has now caught itself up and isnow acting as dialogue in this shot with the main character and a characteroff screen. This shot has been edited so that it just carries onto the nextshot. The lighting is again natural.
    • Shutter Island Trailer (Part 4)Shot 1 : Shot 3, 4 and 5:In this shot the target audience see the protagonists of the In this sequence the target audience see a long shot of afilm in a mid shot with an officer in front of them and behind patient then a mid shot of the marshal followed by a mid shotthem at either flank of the pair. I feel that it is done in this way of the patient once again. In this sequence it appears to bebecause it gives a more authoritarian layout and portrays the that the patient tells the US Marshal that he needs to beprotagonists as being under control. There is still the same silent whilst on the island. There is still an ominous sound onominous sound along with dialogue on this shot. This shot is this shot and is designed to make the patient even creepieralso shot with natural lighting. It also jumps straight to the than normal. The lighting is natural and there is little editingnext shot and does not fade to black. on this shot.Shot 2: Shot 6, 7 and 8:In this shot we see a close up of the protagonists handing In this sequence the audience see three close ups of at firstover their guns to the officers on the island. A high pitch bass drum sort of sound is heard when about what is about to happen.the guns are handed over. This signifies to the audience thatthere has been a significant change on the island. Thelighting is still natural but transitions to black at the end of theshot.

This sequence that it is important for the right weapons to be lasts for seven seconds chosen when doing violence. For example if I was to have a film where everything goes wrong for the protagonist then maybe I would use an axe. Or if the film was about a complete psychotic killer then maybe I would use such things as chainsaws as the are a more iconic piece of weaponry for an antagonist. Also I have decided to make sure that if my film trailer is to contain blood then I need to make sure I have it in the most gory and most disturbing way as possible.
