  2. 2. WHAT FOODS ARE IN THE GRAIN GROUP Any food made from wheat rice oats cornmeal and barley or another cereal grain is a grain product. Bread, pasta and breakfast cereals are examples of grain products.

WHOLE GRAINS <ul><li>Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel (the bran,germ, </li></ul><ul><li>and endosperm). </li></ul><ul><li>Whole grains are: </li></ul><ul><li>Whole-wheat flour. </li></ul><ul><li>Bulgur (cracked wheat). </li></ul><ul><li>Oatmeal. </li></ul><ul><li>Whole cornmeal. </li></ul><ul><li>Brown rice. </li></ul>

REFINED GRAINS <ul><li>Refined grains have been milled, a process that removes the bran and germ. </li></ul><ul><li>This is done to give grains a finer texture , but it also removes dietary fibber,iron,and many B vitamins. </li></ul><ul><li>Some examples of refined grain products are: </li></ul><ul><li>White flour. </li></ul><ul><li>White bread. </li></ul><ul><li>White rice. </li></ul>

Eating grains , especially whole grains , provides HEALTH BENEFITS. · People who eat whole grains as part of a healthy diet have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. · Grains provide many NUTRIENTS that are vital for the health and maintenance of our bodies.
  6. 6. Health benefits <ul><li>Consuming foods rich in fibber, such as whole grains: </li></ul><ul><li>Reduces the risk of coronary </li></ul><ul><li>Help with weight management. </li></ul><ul><li>May reduce constipation.  </li></ul>
  7. 7. Nutrients <ul><li>Nutrients are all the digestible parts of food. </li></ul><ul><li>GRAINS are important sources of many nutrients </li></ul><ul><li>Dietary fibber </li></ul><ul><li>B vitamins </li></ul><ul><li>Minerals (iron, magnesium) </li></ul>

What to look for on the label <ul><li>Choose foods that name whole-grain. </li></ul><ul><li>Read the food label’s ingredients list. </li></ul><ul><li>Food labelled with the words “ multigrain,´´`` stone-ground,´´``100% wheat, ´´`` cracked wheat,´´`` seven-grain , ´´or `` bran´´ are usually not whole- grain products. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Tips For a change,try brown rice or whole-wheat pasta. Use whole grains in mixed dishes. Add whole-grains flour or oatmeal when making cookies. Popcorn, a whole grains, can be a healthy snack with little or no added salt and butter.
