  • 2. WHAT FOODS ARE IN THE GRAIN GROUP? Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal and barley or another cereal grain is a grain product . Bread, pasta and breakfast cereals are examples of grain products .
  • 3. WHOLE GRAINS Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel (the bran, germ, and endosperm).
    • Whole Grains are:
    • whole-wheat flour
    • bulgur (cracked wheat)
    • oatmeal
    • whole cornmeal
    • brown rice
  • 4. REFINED GRAINS
    • Refined grains have been milled, a process that removes the bran and germ.
    • This is done to give grains a finer texture , but it also removes dietary fibber, iron, and many B vitamins.
    • Some examples of refined grain products are :
    • white flour
    • white bread
    • white rice
  • 5. Why is important to eat grains, especially whole grains?
    • Eating grains , especially whole grains, provides HEALTH BENEFITS.
    • People who eat whole grains as part of a healthy diet have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases.
    • Grains provide many NUTRIENTS that are vital for the health and maintenance of our bodies.
  • 6. Health benefits
    • Consuming foods rich in fibber, such as whole grains:
    • Reduces the risk of coronary
    • Help with weight management.
    • May reduce constipation. 
  • 7. Nutrients are all the digestable parts of food
    • GRAINS are important sources of many nutrients
    • Dietary fibber
    • B vitamins
    • Minerals (iron, magnesium)

  • 8. What to look for on the label
    • Read the food label's ingredients list.
    • Choose foods that name whole-grain
    • Food labelled with the words ``multi-grain,´´ ``stone-ground,´´ ``100% wheat,´´ ``cracked wheat,´´ ``seven-grain , ´´or ``bran´´ are
    • usually not whole-grain products.
  • 9. For a change, try brown rice or whole-wheat pasta. Use whole grains in mixed dishes. Add whole-grain flour or oatmeal when making cookies. Popcorn, a whole grains, can be a healthy snack whith little or no added salt and butter TIPS
