1. Narrative theory :prop and character types
Objective: To learn the theory of prop & to apply this theory to
the thriller film I will create.
2. Vladimir Propp
Propp was a Russian scholar who analysed
the basic plot components of Russian folk
tales to identify their narrative elements. He
concluded that all characters could be
resolved into 7 different character types.

3. The hero:
This is the character that leads the narrative , is
usually looking for something- a quest, or trying
to solve something for instance a mystery. This
does not necessarily have to be a male.

The villain:
This character has conflict with the hero and
tries to stop the from succeeding.
5. 3rd character type
The Doner:
Gives hero something, a clue, a talisman, special
power-which helps them complete their quest
6. 4th character type
The princess:
This character is the love interest. Usually a prize
or reward for the hero. If the hero is female,
there can be a prize but that is unusual. E.g
Fiona from Shrek.
7. 5th character type
The helper:
This is the character that helps the hero, often
acts as a side kick – E.g donkey from shrek
8. 6th character types
The princess’ father:
An authority who offers a reward to the hero for
completing their quest. That reward might be a
prince, a princess or in modern narratives.
9. 7th character type
The false hero:
The false hero her takes credit for the hero’s
actions or tries to marry the princess.
