    • Do Science and Theology Conflict or Complement?
      • God can be revealed to people in many ways:
        • Through Nature
        • Through Scripture
        • Through our interactions with other people.
    • We cannot compare scripture with science , because they are on different levels, but we can compare theology (a fallible human interpretation) with science (another fallible human interpretation) while trying to search for truth.  Instead of asking "Bible or science?", we should think "theology and science" and have confidence in both of God's revelations, in scripture and nature.
    • Where is God in the Universe?
      • Many people question who and what is God
        • If we can’t see, touch, hear or feel God how do we know that there is a God?
        • Concepts of Heaven don’t seem to mesh with our technologically advanced society
        • Or don’t they?????
        • Lets start by considering what a special place we live in.
    • Earth from Space
    • Habitat Zone
    •
    • Habitable Zone
    • We don’t always recognize the obvious……
      • Did the ocean create the writing in the sand by the random action of the waves?
      • We live in a very special world
      • Our bodies are incredible machines
      • Was all of this by chance, just a random event?
      • Can Science help us to understand if there is a creator?
    • Where is God – Can Science Help
      • I’m a scientist, not a theologian of any sort
        • I’m very comfortable with what science is and is not.
          • It’s just a process people use to try and understand nature
        • I’m happier when scientific insights supports my religious beliefs.
        • However, my faith does not require tangible explanations
          • I feel the presence of God in my life and need the strength and wisdom that he offers me.
      • When people have made major leaps in understanding with science
        • The win prizes
        • They are admired by their supporters
        • Human nature can get the best of them and….
        • They start to think that they have figured universe all out,
        • They conclude there is no more mystery left in the universe
        • They become self righteous, God does not fit into their world view!
      • But……..Scientific theories come and go across the ages
      • Let me share with you some examples:
    • God in Nature Has our understanding of the Universe brought us closer to God or farther away?
      • Up until the late 16 th century people believed that the universe revolved around the earth and many believed the world was flat
      • Up until 100 years ago people believed that the universe was static.
        • Even great thinkers like Einstein believed in a unchanging and infinite universe
      • With the understanding of quantam mechanics, gravity and electromagnetism
        • People think they have the universe all figured out
      • Many are saying “God is Dead”
    • Is God Dead?……LOL!
      • A common mistake people have made is to confuse theories with truths.
      • Human knowledge and understanding certainly advance by taking educated guesses i.e. making “theories” and testing them for consistency with Nature.
        • When our theories seem to test out we conclude that we now understand.
        • Over the ages people have often believed that they have figured everything out.
      • When people believe that they fully comprehend the universe then it looses its mystery and God begins to feel more like a myth than a reality
        • We forget that our senses only give us a limited glimpse into the Universe
        • Time and time again small cracks have developed in our theories
        • These cracks often lead to whole new understandings and enlightenments
      • 100 years ago Edwin Hubbell put a huge crack in our understanding of the static universe
        • His ovservations brought God the Creator right back to center stage!
    • Static Universe – Not!
      • Hubbel was an astronomer studying the sprecta of stars.
      • He discovered the “Red Shift”
        • no matter the direction he pointed his telescopic spectrometers, he found that stars were moving away from us.
        • The further the distance of the stars from Earth, the faster the star was moving away from Earth.
        • The universe was not static but expanding!
      • It appeared to Hubbel that the universe was exploding apart
      • Looking the other way in time he concluded that the universe must have had a beginning!
        • The universe started at a definite point in time, at an infinitesimally small point and at a central location in space.
        • Pure energy was converted in to matter in what we now know as the “Big Bang”.
        • The ringing of the explosion can still be heard today if we listen to the microwave frequencies!
    • Genesis 1 – God Created the Universe
    • Genesis 1 – God Created the Universe
    • Strings and Things
      • Einstein was so taken with Hubbell’s findings that he changed his theory of General Relativity to allow for an expanding universe.
        • In the initial development of his theory, his equations revealed that the universe was not static but either expanding or contracting.
        • He had added the a “cosmological constant” to his equation to keep the universe static!
        • Einstein regarded the cosmological constant as the most significant error of his career.
      • Today, scientists continue to work on developing a better understanding of our universe
        • Tying together the physics of the vary large – Gravity
        • And the physics of the very small – quantum mechanics
        • This has proven to be very challenging
      • Modern “Unified Theories” all require multiple dimensions beyond our 3 space and 1 time dimensions we preceive.
      • String Theory has made great strides at explaining the preponderance of multiple sub atomic particles we find as more closely examine matter
        • providing an explanation of how matter can be comprised of energy
        • And how the forces which control our universe operate.
      • Modern String Theory requires 10 space-time dimensions
    • 10 Dimensions: A place for heaven in our Universe!
      • Ever since Copernicus, Galilio and Kepler broke the bad new that the universe doesn’t revolve around the earth, people have thought that science would ultimately prove that God doesn’t exist.
        • Not surprisingly, current scientific theories support exactly the opposite conclusion.
      • People of faith through out the ages have believed in God, the creator of the universe.
        • Just look at the beauty of the night sky
        • The complexity of our world
        • The miracle of life
      • Science and Theology need not conflict
        • As our scientific understanding of nature grows so does the evidence for a creator
        • God created a universe in which life could evolve, evolution does not disprove the existence of God
        • Scientific arguments against the existence of God are not consistent with Scientific Facts
          • But are a result of human arrogance
        • The nature of the scientific process is that theories only last as long as the observations that support them
        • God gave us the gift of curiosity and intelligence and positioned our world in a place where we could observe the universe
        • Ultimately, I believe that scientific understanding will enable and enlighten our faith as does scripture
      • As a scientist I am happy that modern scientific thought is consistent with my religious views
        • However, whether science is consistent or not does not so much matter.
        • I feel Gods presence in my life
        • I need Gods strength to help me through those challenges which seem overwhelming
        • I know through the teachings of Jesus that the we can make this world a peaceful and happy place for all.

      • You brought together vast amounts of energy and released them in a fury of creation, the light and sounds of which still echo across the cosmos after 14 billion years
      • You’ve established physical laws for our universe which guide all phenomenon, from the infinitesimally small to the infinitely large
      • You’ve forged the elements of life in the furnaces of mighty stars and dispersed them across the universe.
      • Forces which we struggle to comprehend brought together new generations of stars, preparing the way for you to plant of the seeds of life
      • Mightly Lord, you reserved a special place in which we might grow and prosper; and come to recognize the awesome gift you have created!
