    • The Golden Gate Bridge The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate, a narrow, 400-foot (120 m) deep strait that serves as the mouth of the San Francisco Bay
      • The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge across Golden Gate , the opening of the San Francisco Bay onto the Pacific Ocean .
      • The Golden Gate Bridge had the longest suspension bridge span in the world when it was completed in 1937.
      • The project cost over $27 million
      • The bridge is a lovely shade of "International Orange," not really gold.
      • It was selected for the way it blends with the natural elements surrounding it.
      • The U.S. Navy wanted to paint it black with yellow stripes to be sure it was seen by passing ships!

      • At 5:12 am on April 18, 1906, a major earthquake struck San Francisco and Northern California.
      • More than three-quarters of the city lay in ruins, including almost all of the downtown core.
      • More than half the city's population of 400,000 were left homeless.
      • After being devastated by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt.
      • San Francisco is a popular international tourist destination renowned for :
      • - Victorian architecture,
      • - the Golden Gate Bridge,
      • - Alcatraz Island,
      • - the cable cars,
      • Coit Tower, and
      • Chinatown.
    • Alcatraz is a smaller island located in the middle of San Francisco Bay . It was a lighthouse , then a military fortification, then a military prison with the highest security in US. The worst criminals were sent there
      • Because the cold water and strong sea currents, Alcatraz was an ideal location for a prison.
      • During its 29 years of operation, no prisoners successfully escaped.
      • 37 prisoners were involved in 14 attempts, 2 men trying twice;
      • 7 were shot and killed,
      • 2 drowned, and the rest were recaptured. 2 prisoners made it off the island but were returned, one in 1945 and one in 1962.
