  2. The Golden Gate Bridge The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate, a narrow, 400-foot (120 m) deep strait that serves as the mouth of the San Francisco Bay
    • The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge across Golden Gate , the opening of the San Francisco Bay onto the Pacific Ocean .
    • The Golden Gate Bridge had the longest suspension bridge span in the world when it was completed in 1937.
    • The project cost over $27 million
    • The bridge is a lovely shade of "International Orange," not really gold.
    • It was selected for the way it blends with the natural elements surrounding it.
    • The U.S. Navy wanted to paint it black with yellow stripes to be sure it was seen by passing ships!
    • The Golden Gate required the tallest towers, the longest, thickest cables, and the largest underwater foundation piers ever built.

    • In 1776, the Spanish established a fort at the Golden Gate
    • Because of the The California Gold Rush in 1848 the city grew rapidly.

    • At 5:12 am on April 18, 1906, a major earthquake struck San Francisco and Northern California.
    • More than three-quarters of the city lay in ruins, including almost all of the downtown core.
    • More than half the city's population of 400,000 were left homeless.
    • After being devastated by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt.
    • San Francisco is a popular international tourist destination renowned for :
    • - Victorian architecture,
    • - the Golden Gate Bridge,
    • - Alcatraz Island,
    • - the cable cars,
    • Coit Tower, and
    • Chinatown.
