Distance is our way of life <ul><li>Empire State College: </li></ul><ul><li>17,000+ students enrolled / yr (65% part-time) </li></ul><ul><li>35 locations in NYS (17% out-of-state residence, incl.overseas) </li></ul><ul><li>157 FT faculty & 800+ adjuncts </li></ul><ul><li>Ave. student age: 36 for undergrads (41 for grads) </li></ul><ul><li>43% of credits attempted were in fully online courses </li></ul><ul><li>The Library </li></ul><ul><li>3 FT librarians, 2 PT evening staff </li></ul><ul><li>No physical collection – fully online collections </li></ul>
    3. 3. <ul><li>Access Issues: </li></ul><ul><li>Chronology : limited lab & staff availability </li></ul><ul><li>Geography : locations inaccessible to many </li></ul><ul><li>Locations : limited seat availability </li></ul><ul><li>Pedagogy : </li></ul><ul><ul><li>room discipline & noise can be disruption </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>orient to classroom environment takes time </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Technology Requirements : </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Students: none beyond basic computer skills </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Some labs don’t have proper equipment & tech support </li></ul></ul>Phase 1: Computer Lab Broadcasts
