Global warming explained Global warming explained Presentation Transcript

  • GLOBAL WARMING
  • It should NOT be confused with climate change
  • What is global warming?
    • GLOBAL WARMING
    • is the increase of the Earth’s average surface temperature due to a build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
    • CLIMATE CHANGE
    • is a broader term that refers to long-term changes in climate, including average temperature and precipitation.
    Difference
  • Increase in the average measured temperature of the Earth's surface air and oceans
  • How Global Warming Works Greenhouse gases Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 )
  • CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING
  • Pollution from coal, natural gas, and oil
  • CO 2 from airplanes & vehicles
  • POPULATION INCREASE
  • DEFORESTATION
  • Increased CO 2 results in
  • Greenhouse Effect
  • The Sun’s energy passes through the car’s windshield. This energy (heat) is trapped inside the car and cannot pass back through the windshield, causing the inside of the car to warm up. Example of the Greenhouse Effect
  • Global warming causes
  • Melting of glaciers
  • Polar Bear Extinction
  • Warmer waters and more hurricanes
  • Increased probability and intensity of droughts and heat waves
  • Increased Temperature
  • Melting Polar ice caps
  • Animals like……
  •
  • THESE…..
  • think like……
  • WHERE IS my habitat…!!!
  • THIS….
  • ANTARCTICA – losing ice faster..!!!!!! BEFORE NOW
  • Major CONSEQUENCE of global warming is…………. GUESS WHAT !!
  •
  •
  • At some places, it
  •
  • At others……
  •
  • SOMEWHERE it’s tooo…….ooo
  • HOT
  • WHEREAS At others tooo…..
  • COLD
  •
  • Its all because of
  • GLOBAL WARMING
  • CAUSED BY WHOM…?????
  • WHO Is THE CULPRIT??????
  •
  • WE are the ones causing It
  •
  • BUT
  • WE need PROOF
  • SO Here’s the PROOF
  • Portage Glacier
    • Alaska
Photos: NOAA Photo Collection and Gary Braasch – WorldViewOfGlobalWarming.org 1914 2004
  • Colorado River
    • Arizona
    June 2002 Dec 2003
  • When did global warming start?
  • Global Atmospheric Concentration of CO 2
  • DON’T CRY
  • It’s NOT too LATE ACT NOW!!!!
  • We can stop global warming!
  • JUST DO…………these Follow the arrow…..
  • Spread awareness
  • Turn off your computer or the TV when you’re not using it.
  • Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
  • Be Bulb Smart—Use CFLs Incandescent Compact Fluorescent
    • 1,430 lbs. CO 2 pollution avoided
    • $30 saved
    500 lbs. of coal
  • Dress lightly when it’s hot instead of turning up the air conditioning.
  • Unplug unused electronics
  • Plant trees.
  • Recycle.
  • Drive LESS, drive SMART Use a bicycle or bus
  • AND
  • Have Faith on……………
  • Wind Power
  • Solar Power
  • Fuel efficient cars
  • Hey…..!!! Its working
  • Global Warming: Shifting Gears
  • 2007 Goal: Reductions in CO 2 Per Year Billions of Metric Tons Carbon
  • BUT
  • 2007 Reductions in CO 2 Per Year Gigaton Carbon Produce electricity efficiently Use electricity efficiently Vehicle efficiency Solar and Wind Power Biofuels Carbon capture and storage Billions of Metric Tons Carbon Our Goal
  • SAVE THE EARTH Before its too late
  • GLOBAL WARMING
