Abilene Christian University has leveraged mobile technology to bring about transformative change in this Southwest Texas university campus. This presentation focuses on the benefits of K-12 education following the lead of ACU to empower 21st century learners to be prepared for the future.

  • Many K-12 schools and higher education institutions are currently undergoing innovative and transformational shifts in addressing the learning needs for the 21st-century student. How will K-12 educators and administrators enable 21st-century students to fuse the traditional three Rs with the four Cs (critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity and innovation)? Where are 21st-century K-12 and university learners receiving the fundamental skills, resources, and tools to be equipped for their future? Let us identify and examine powerful examples of transformative planning, design, and execution of professional learning communities. These institutions are currently using action research and experimentation to accept the challenge to prepare students to become global learning leaders.

    Before we seek schools that are successfully accepting the modern learning challenge, we must identify some of the shared common beliefs many of these institutions and ourselves subscribe to as outlined in the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Standards for the 21st-Century Learner (2007):
    - Importance of reading as a window to the world
    - Inquiry and challenges provide frameworks for learning
    - Ethical behavior is essential in the use of information and must be taught
    - Technology skills are crucial for future employment needs
    - Equitable access as a key component for education

    All of these beliefs according to the AASL are essential in equipping our students for their future. Consider the following requirements our students will need to responsibly understand, learn, think, behave, research, and problem solve in the 21st-century. They will need to:

    inquire/think critically to gain knowledge.

    draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.

    share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society.

    pursue personal and aesthetic growth.

    These necessary strategies and skills must serve as learning objectives to complement local, state, and national standards for 21st-century student-centered learning. They will also serve as a lens in our investigation of educational institutions meeting the needs of their students.

    Abilene Christian University (ACU) exemplifies a higher education institution that is currently leveraging engaging and student-centered mobile technology to create transformative change for students. In addition, they are also globally inviting/sharing resources via podcasts, YouTube, and their information portal ACU Connected on the Internet. ACU Connected best illustrates their commitment and passion for their students to become 21st-century enabled students. For example, the ACU student, faculty, and staff produced 2007 movie entitled Connected video vision casted a learning environment all stakeholders wished to experience (http://www.acu.edu/technology/mobilelearning/video/connected.html). The vision depicted has since materialized into reality as students are currently given mobile learning devices such as the Apple iPodTouch, iPhone, and iPad to produce “extraordinary” results in a 21st-century classroom not defined by walls, doors, nor tables.     Now, the purpose of focusing upon Abilene Christian University does not center upon giving students an iPhone or iPad, yet rather the vision of mobile learning principles they have been developing since 2007. Pilot projects, research studies, and faculty & student interviews have resulted in four emergent guiding principles:

    Mobile learning is fundamentally about engagement.

    Mobile computing depends on looking at users as full participants.

    The true mobile experience is never a sync away.

    The real question isn’t native app or web app.

    Imagine how K-12 students could be engaged in student-centered inquiry/challenge learning using mobile learning tools. An excellent example of such technology integration is happening at Culbreth Middle School, Chapel Hill, North Carolina under the leadership of Principal Susan Wells.
