  2. 2. The Beginning <ul><li>The Wright brothers were first interested in flying when their father brought home a rubber-band powered helicopter. They were hooked from then on. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Inventions <ul><li>Wilbur Wright </li></ul><ul><li>One of his first inventions was a machine that folded papers for mailing. </li></ul><ul><li>Orville Wright </li></ul><ul><li>Orville’s first inventions assisted by his brother was a professional press for his printing business. </li></ul>
  4. 4. The First plane <ul><li>In August of 1900, Wilbur built his first glider. He contacted the government, and picked out an appropriate location, which was off the coast of North Carolina, called Kitty Hawk. They weren’t too impressed with the outcome of their first glider. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Success! <ul><li>In 1902, the Wright brothers became a success. They tried out their model at Kitty Hawk, and were surprised by the outcome. They glided a record of 620 feet. </li></ul><ul><li>They returned home to Dayton, believing that they could develop a propeller and an engine, to begin their last project, a flying machine! </li></ul><ul><li>http://www.hfmgv.org </li></ul>
  6. 6. The Wright Brothers <ul><li>This is a video of Wilbur and Orville Wright taking off on their first real flight. Watch how amazing this is, and how they absolutely changed the world. </li></ul>
  7. 7. New and improved <ul><li>In 1903, they came up with a flyer made of spruce, ash and muslin, and with a wingspan of 40 feet. On December 17, 1903, Orville leaped inside the machine, and took off very shakily from their location Kitty Hawk. He flew 120 feet, for 12 seconds! Those seconds changed the world, lifting it to new heights. </li></ul>
