In the MasterBuilder approach to construction,the architect was responsible for the entireproject from concept, design through toconstruction and handover.The MasterBuilder was an Artist driven by hispassionate dedication for excellence.   • 3. In Ancient Times well into 19th Century theMasterBuilder worked with the Project Ownerproviding both design and construction as oneseamless service . Although some craftsmen like Michel Angelo took on separate design contracts and others like Leon Battista Alberti (Italian Architect and Author) wrote about establishing the art of architecture as a profession distinct from construction and engineering, it wasn’t till the Industrial Revolution that the separation was made possible. The reasons for separation between design andconstruction during the Industrial Revolutionincluded the continual increase in constructionproducts, methods and technologies as well asthe trend towards specialization and division oflabor.   • 7. The separation was made absolute in 1935with the passage of the Miller Act whichrequired contractors on US federalgovernment projects exceeding a certainamount to post performance and paymentbonds.Ancient Times Renaissance Industrial Revolution 20th Century 7

The implication was project Owners from thenon had to contractually engage the services ofan architect to perform design services and acontractor to perform construction servicesresulting in what is commonly known today asthe Design-Bid-Build project delivery method. The late 20th century witnessed renewedinterest in reviving the MasterBuilder method toaddress some of the flaws in Design-Bid-Build.A modern version emerged whereby anintegrated team of design and contractingprofessionals provide both design andconstruction services under one contract inwhat is commonly known today as the Design-Build project delivery method.
