• 1. Case Study: Music Video Director
Melina Matsoukas
• 2. I chose Melina Matsoukas because she has done a lot of work with both Rihanna and Beyoncé. Also her videos are very loud and bright; through her use of colour and camera work.
WHY I CHOSE Melina matsoukas
• 3. “chalk full of bright colours or crisp black and white images, smooth spotlights and tasteful retro models.”
• 4. One element Matsoukas has used in some of the music videos she has directed-is black and white colour. Usually the black and white effect is smooth and calming, however, this is juxtaposed against the songs which this effect it layered upon.
Signature style
• 5. Example of black and white in Rihanna ft. slash-Rockstar 101
• 6. Another effect this music video director uses is bright colour, Matsoukas said herself that her videos “are full of bright colours”
SIGNATURE STyle
• 7. Example of bright colours in Rihanna-Rude boy
• 8. Use of widescreen, like many other music video directors this is a predominant feature of many of Matsoukas videos.
Signature style
• 9. Example of widescreen in Beyoncé-Green light
• 10. Matsoukas mentions she uses stylish retro models in her music videos.
Signature style
• 11. Example of retro models in Beyoncé-why don’t you love me
• 12. Melina has often taken lyrics from the songs and visually presented them within the music video, she has also used the song title and also the artists name.
Signature style
