  • 1. MANAGER EXTRA February 2009Inside—Introducing 2009:A Season of SunshineAn in-depth Look atthe Body Systems
  • 2. The Body Systems—a Sound Approach to Health Many years ago, Nature’s Sunshine began teaching people about health using a body-systemsapproach. That is, the human body is a group of interconnected systems—circulatory, digestive, immune, nervous, etc.—and each plays a critical role in health and life. Often though, one ormore systems require extra help and nutrition. NSP products are categorized by the body systems that they support. As you refer to a product, you’ll discover key body systems that product supports. If a customer has concerns with aparticular area of health, you can draw upon a grouping of products that have been formulatedespecially for that system. We created the Health Analyzer tool (see samplein this magazine) to help customers determine which If you haven’t already(if any) body systems need extra nutritional support. done so, get familiar withSimply have your customer read through the list of the Health Analyzer sheethealth concerns on the left. If any of these concerns inserted in this magazine.are valid, he/she should check all of the boxes in Order more copies usingthat row. Then add up all of the checked boxes in the Stock No. 2757-7 (50 sheets).columns. Flip the paper over to get the “analysis.” Also available on our website. This indicates which body systems could use someextra support. The Digestive System—Your Foundation for Health Food takes an incredible journey through the human body, and the key to successful andnecessary digestion lies in the enzymes. Digestive enzymes are catalysts to a process where foodis broken down into tiny particles that can either be used by the body for energy and restoration oreliminated. This system is powerful, yet delicate. Digestion starts in the mouth where enzymes in saliva start breaking down starches. In thestomach, hydrochloric acid and pepsin break down proteins. In the small intestine, variousenzymes act on carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The pancreas contributes enzymes while theliver and gallbladder add bile to emulsify fats.DID YOU KNOW?• ood should not be in your digestive system for more than 24 hours. F• s we age, our bodies produce less hydrochloric acid. A• bout 90 percent of the absorption of nutrients occurs when food is in the small intestine. AFood Enzymes Digestive enzymes break down food into smaller particles that can be utilized for energy orfor building blocks. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain active enzymes that help in this process. For instance, pineapple contains bromelain, which helps in the digestion of protein. Pineapple iscommonly served at Brazilian barbecues to aid in the digestion of meats. ID: 1007815; Country: BELARUS
  • 3. Food Enzymes is especially beneficial for digesting meats and proteins, but it also helps in thebreakdown of starches and fats. It contains betaine hydrochloride, bile salts, bromelain, lipase,alpha-amylase, pancreatin, papain and pepsin. If you have occasionalProactazyme Plus® digestive disturbances, take Proactazyme Plus blends amylase, glucoamylase, lipase, one or two capsules of Foodcellulase, invertase, malt diastase, alpha galactosidase and Enzymes or Proactazyme Pluspeptidase. It helps the body digest all types of food—sugars, with each meal for one weekvegetable fibers, long-chain starches, fats and proteins. Any material left after traveling through this 20+ foot-long intestinepasses into the colon or lower bowel, where water is removed from waste as the body preparesto eliminate it. Waste should not sit in the colon for long periodsof time, as sensitive tissues there may reabsorb it. • 725 million: The $CleanStart ® amount Americans Constipation or a sluggish bowel can often be the result of spend a year on over-a low-fiber diet. • 5. The Respiratory SystemWorks Hard So You CanBreathe Easyby Jody Taylor The primary function of the respiratorysystem is to supply the blood with oxygen, which in turn, delivers that oxygen to allparts of the body. Breathing happens with the help of themouth, nose, throat, trachea, bronchi, lungs and diaphragm. Oxygen enters therespiratory system when we inhale. Theoxygen then travels to the trachea, which isa tube that enters the chest cavity. There thetrachea splits into two smaller tubes calledthe bronchi. These lead directly into thelungs, where they divide again into manysmaller tubes connected to tiny, spongy, air-filled sacs called alveoli, which are surrounded bycapillaries. The inhaled oxygen passes into the alveoli and then diffuses through the capillariesinto the blood, making it oxygen-rich. Meanwhile, waste-rich blood releases its carbon dioxideinto the alveoli. It follows the same path out of the lungs as weexhale. Inhaling and exhaling is facilitated by the muscles ofthe diaphragm. When they contract, oxygen is pulled into the Take good care of yourlungs. • 6. The Circulatory System’s Here to Pump You Up by Jody Taylor On average, the body has about 5 liters (1.3 gallons) of blood continually traveling through it in a “loop” formed by the heart, lungs and nearly 60,000 miles of blood vessels. The circulatory system delivers oxygen and nutrients to the body and picks up waste and toxins that need to be eliminated. This system has three phases. The first phase is pulmonary circulation, which is the movement of blood from the heart, to the lungs, and back to the heart again. Waste-rich blood is pumped through the heart to the lungs, where the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen happens. Following this exchange, the pumping action of the heart forces the fresh, oxygen-rich blood back out on its journey through the body. The second phase is coronary circulation, which is the movement of blood through the tissues of the heart itself. This circulation provides the hard-working heart organ with the oxygen and nutrients that it needs to survive. The third phase is systemic circulation, which supplies nourishment to all of the body’s tissues. Oxygen-rich blood enters the capillaries, where oxygen and nutrients are released and waste products are collected. The waste-rich blood then flows into the veins to be circulated back to the heart, where pulmonary circulation begins again. NSP offers several key products to help this intricate system stay balanced. An organ only about the size of a fist, the heart Super Omega-3 EPA ® pumps approximately Research shows that consuming omega-3 fatty acids, such 1,800 gallons of blood as EPA and DHA found in fish oil, may help reduce the through its chambers risk of heart disease. • 7. The Urinary System—The Body’s Filterby Jody Taylor The major organs of the urinary system are thekidneys, a pair of bean-shaped organs that filtersubstances from the blood and produce waste inthe form of urine. Urine flows from the kidneysthrough two long, thin tubes called ureters, which transport it to the bladder. The bladder is amuscular vessel designed to expand and contractas needed to hold urine until it can be excreted. The bladder is connected to the urethra, whichultimately leads to an opening out of the body. The kidneys spend every minute of theday filtering out impurities. Blood enters thekidneys, which are composed of about 2 millionmicroscopic filters called nephrons. Nephronseliminate extra minerals, electrolyles and wastematerials from the blood. In addition to their vital role in ridding thebody of waste, kidneys play an importantregulatory role. They: • aintain water balance, keeping the water in tissues at a constant level. M • ontrol calcium levels in the blood to maintain healthy bones. • 10. The Structural System—The Body’s Frameworkby Courtney Hammond The structural system givesthe body its form and theability to move. It is made upof bones, connective tissue andmuscles. Calcium phosphate makes upboth the solid outer edge of thebone and the spongy materialinside the bone. And whilebones stop growing in sizeduring the mid teens to early20s, the growing process goeson as bones continually rebuildthemselves. Connective tissues make upthe joints, which are designedto permit movement betweenbones that must meet, but nottouch. They bind the bonestogether while cushioning and lubricating the joint. While bones and joints provide the framework, muscles create the movement by convertingchemical energy from food into physical energy. There are more than 650 muscles in the body.EverFlex® EverFlex is a proprietary formula that offers the benefits of glucosamine, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid, MSM and devil’s claw herb in one convenient tablet. • 11. The Glandular System— Hormones’ Headquarters by Courtney Hammond The glandular system helps regulate many important processes in the body, including mood, growth and development, tissue function, metabolism, sexual function and reproductive processes. The glandular system is made up of two types of glands: exocrine and endocrine. Exocrine glands excrete substances through ducts and generally release them outside the body (such as with tear ducts, sweat glands and salivary glands). Endocrine glands produce and release hormones directly into the bloodstream where they can be taken to other parts of the body for specific use. A healthy glandular system regulates itself, monitoring the level of hormones in the blood and adjusting accordingly. Major Glands of the Endocrine System • ituitary: the pituitary gland is considered the master gland because P it produces hormones that control several other endocrine glands, including the thyroid, adrenals and reproductive glands. • ypothalamus: the hypothalamus is the link between the nervous H and glandular systems. Nerve cells in the hypothalamus help control the hormone secretions of the pituitary, which regulates the thyroid, adrenals and reproductive glands. • hyroid: the hormones produced by the thyroid determine the rate that T cells burn food to produce energy. • arathyroid: the parathyroid produces hormones that regulate the P amount of calcium in the blood so that the nervous and structural systems work properly. • drenal glands: the adrenal hormones have a wide range of functions, A including regulating the salt/water balance in the body and the body’s stress response; and influencing metabolism, the immune system and sexual development. • ineal: the pineal gland secretes melatonin, which influences the body’s P sleep patterns. • ancreas: this organ secretes hormones vital to maintaining healthy P blood sugar levels. • eproductive glands (ovaries and testes): these glands secrete the sex R hormones responsible for sexual development and reproduction.10 Manager Extra, February 2009

Because of some complications, her surgery was postponed. During that time, she met with Bonnie Clayton—who would become her upline manager— and began an herbal program. Dale’s life was forever changed from that day forward. After overcoming their health crises, the Scotts started studying up on natural products and holistic health practices.
