  • 2. PAWS of Hertford County Protecting Animals Worth Saving <ul><li>Animal shelter located in Hertford County, NC. </li></ul><ul><li>PAWS is a non-profit group working in the county owned shelter </li></ul>
  • 3. Why? <ul><li>I chose this agency because of my passion for animals. </li></ul><ul><li>I want to make a difference in the life of an abused, unwanted, homeless, neglected animal. </li></ul><ul><li>I want to educate people on how to care and love a pet </li></ul>
  • 4. Mission <ul><li>The mission statement of PAWS of Hertford County is to make our community a more humane place for homeless, abused, and neglected animals through increased spaying and neutering, high- quality sheltering, conscientious adoptions, education of the public, and animal welfare advocacy. </li></ul>
  • 5. Goals <ul><li>To save unwanted, homeless shelter animals. </li></ul><ul><li>Find forever homes for the animals through adoption events. </li></ul><ul><li>Educate the community on pet care </li></ul><ul><li>Advocate for animal cruelty laws </li></ul>
  • 6. Just the facts <ul><li>2006 Paws was started </li></ul><ul><li>Paws works out of the county owned shelter </li></ul><ul><li>Funding through donations & fund raisers </li></ul><ul><li>Paws members are volunteers-no pay </li></ul><ul><li>2010- 1072 dogs & cats were surrendered or picked up by animal control. Paws was able to save and adopt out 527 </li></ul><ul><li>862 dogs & cats spayed/neutered in 2010 </li></ul><ul><li>Paws has relationships with other agencies to help assist with placements- K9 Justice League, Wake County SPCA, Lab Rescue and Norfolk SPCA </li></ul><ul><li>Paws provides low cost spay/neuter options for the residents of Hertford County </li></ul><ul><li>Paws provides low cost 1year rabies shots to help residents be law abiding </li></ul><ul><li>Paws vaccinates, spays/neuters, heartworm test, all dogs & cats before adoption </li></ul>

Volunteer Duties <ul><li>Daily care of the shelter animals </li></ul><ul><li>Administer vaccines & medication </li></ul><ul><li>Help to socialize the dogs & cats </li></ul><ul><li>Serve as an advocate for the animals </li></ul><ul><li>Help foster animals in need </li></ul><ul><li>Function as an adoption counselor at adoption events </li></ul>

What I Learned? <ul><li>Animal cruelty cannot be tolerated </li></ul><ul><li>Too many animals are put to death in shelters every day because of: lack of space, temperament, breed & age </li></ul><ul><li>The importance of spaying & neutering </li></ul><ul><li>The importance of high quality sheltering for the unwanted, abused, neglected and homeless animals </li></ul><ul><li>The importance of educating people on proper care & humane treatment of pets </li></ul><ul><li>The importance of a “No Kill” shelter </li></ul><ul><li>The importance of a Humane group located in a county owned shelter </li></ul><ul><li>Every dog & cat has worth & value to live & be loved </li></ul>

  • 14. My Foster Kitties <ul><li>I was able to foster 3 kittens and an adult cat for my service project. </li></ul><ul><li>I nursed them back to health, socialized them, and gave them a home environment. </li></ul>
  • 15. Community Benefits <ul><li>Being able to adopt animals that have been socialized. </li></ul><ul><li>Giving people the right match in an animal through high-quality adoption guidelines. </li></ul>
