  2. 2. <ul><li>-After the Qing Dynasty was overpowered in 1911, the Republic of China was formed </li></ul><ul><li>Central government failed due to its low-power state as there were many warlords who dominated and had their own armies throughout China. </li></ul><ul><li>Amidst the 1930’s , the Kuomintang (nationalist) fought with the Chinese Communist Party. With the Communists being outnumbered, they fled to establish a new guerilla base in the “Shaanxi’ province. </li></ul><ul><li>The fights escalated until the year of 1937, when the Japanese invaded China, the two made an alliance to fight and remove the Japanese out of China </li></ul><ul><li>It affected by mainland China </li></ul>Mao Zedong Chiang Kai-Shek

Truman, 1947 USSR US Action Results Action Results -Backed People’s Liberation Army (leader: Mao Zedong) -USSR alliance with the new People’s Republic of China (PRC) -Mao took control of mainland China -Backed the Nationalist Government (leader: Chiang Kai-shek) -They lost and retreated to the island of Taiwan. -1/4 of the world was communist -PRC’s hatred for US

USSR US Action Results Action Results -First successful test of Atomic Bomb -Created their own Hydrogen Bomb which was stronger than the US. -Truman used all US money to create a Hydrogen Bomb; capable of genocide -Began an arms race until the end of the Cold War -Afraid of hidden Soviet Agents - Loyalty Review Board (1947) -Accused innocent people and persecuted them.
  5. 6. <ul><li>Communist won due to strong leadership and peasants support. </li></ul><ul><li>The KMT were too late to destroy the communists because in 1949, the numbers of the communists rose from 1 to 4 million people. </li></ul><ul><li>The USA refused to give the KMT financial and military aid at one point leading to its destruction. </li></ul><ul><li>Peasants find that a communist government would make people treat them as human beings, rather than as trash like what the nobles did in different dynasties of the now destroyed Chinese Empire. </li></ul>
  6. 7. <ul><li>US sided with Chiang Kai-Shek because they were nationalist </li></ul><ul><li>USSR sided with Mao Zedong because they were communist </li></ul><ul><li>Mao/USSR won; Chiang Kai-Shek retreated to Taiwan </li></ul><ul><li>US and USSR created hydrogen bombs and began an “arms race” </li></ul><ul><li>US seemed to be humiliated/weak under the USSR </li></ul><ul><li>Communism has taken more than a quarter of the world </li></ul><ul><li>US feeling defeat in China, moved on to Korea and Vietnam to push our the USSR </li></ul>
