This book comprises excerpts from the Qur’an,
arranged under relevant headings. It provides an
introduction to Islam which is derived directly from
the original, revealed source. No interpretation or
commentary has been added.
The theme of this book – the good life – is taken
from the following verse of the Qur’an:
Be they men or women those who believe and
do what is right, We shall surely endow with
a good life: We shall reward them according
to their noblest actions (16:97).
The meaning of the “good life” mentioned in this verse is clear from the phrase “according to their
noblest actions.” A good life is a life of good actions.
A commentator of the Qur’an, ad-Dahhak, has
defined it as “being content with an honest living
and serving God in one’s life.” This is the meaning
that the Companions of the Prophet and their
followers generally inferred from the phrase. To believe in God and implement His
commandments is to qualify oneself for His
succour. God bestows multiple blessings on a
person who lives a life of faith and righteousness.
He enables him to experience the joy of closeness to
God in his worship; to settle day-to-day problems in
a divinely-inspired manner; to deal with friends
and foes in an equally honest-to-God way, God
guides him on the straight path. He in turn always
seeks God’s pleasure and nothing can turn him
away from this aim. The Qur’an has given a clear exposition of the
theoretical and practical nature of the good life. The
verses which have been selected for this book
describe various fundamental aspects of this life in
the Qur’an’s inimitable style. These passages thus
provide both a description of the good life and an
authentic example of how it should be lived.

  • 7. A Treasury of The Qur’an GOD IS ONEGOD IS ONESay: God is One, The Eternal God. He begot none, nor was He begotten. None is equal to Him. (112:1-4)Mankind, worship your Lord, who has created youand those before you so that you may ward off evil;who has made the earth a couch for you and the skya canopy; and has sent down water from the sky, thereby producing fruits for you to eat. So do notknowingly set up rivals to God. (2:21-22)God forgives not that partners should be ascribedunto Him. He forgives whom He will all other sins.Whoever ascribes partners unto God has strayed farfrom the truth. (4:116) ~8~
  • 8. A Treasury of The Qur’an GOD – THE SUBLIME, THE TREMENDOUSGOD – THE SUBLIME, THETREMENDOUSGod – there is no deity save Him, the Ever-living,the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakesHim. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens andthe earth. Who can intercede with Him save by Hisleave? He knows what lies before humans and whatis after them, and they encompass nothing of Hisknowledge save what He wills. His thronecomprises both the heavens and the earth, and He isnever weary of preserving them. He is the Sublimethe Tremendous. (2:255) ~9~
  • 9. A Treasury of The Qur’an GOD’S SIGNSGOD’S SIGNSYour Lord is God, who created the skies and theearth in six periods, then ascended His Throne. Hethrows the veil of night over day. Swiftly theyfollow one another. The sun, moon and stars aresubservient by His command. His is the creation,His is the command. Blessed be God, the Lord ofthe worlds. Call on your Lord humbly andsecretly; He does not love the transgressors. Donot work corruption in the land after things havebeen set right. Pray to Him fearfully, eagerly.God’s mercy is within reach of the righteous. Hesends forth the winds as harbingers of His mercytill, when they bear a heavy cloud, We drive it to adead land and cause rain to descend thereon, bringing forth all manner of fruit. Thus We willraise the dead to life; perchance you will takeheed. And as for the good land; its vegetationcomes forth by the leave of its Lord. But poor andscant are the fruits which spring from barren soil. ~ 10 ~

  • 11. A Treasury of The Qur’an IN SPACE AND ON EARTHIN SPACE AND ON EARTHSo glory be to God morning and evening. Praise beto Him in space and on earth, at twilight and atnoon. He brings forth the living from the dead, andthe dead from the living, and He revives the earthafter it is dead. Likewise you shall be raised to life. And of His signs is that He created you from dust;now behold you are human beings, ranging widely. And of His signs is that He created for you, ofyourselves, spouses that you might find repose inthem and has planted love and kindness in yourhearts. Surely there are signs in this for people whoreflect. And of His signs are the creation of theheavens and the earth and the variety of yourtongues and hues. Surely there are signs in this forthose who know. And of His signs is yourslumbering by night and day, and your seeking ofHis bounty. Surely in that are signs for those whohear. The lightning which He shows you for fearand hope is yet another of His signs, He sendsdown water from the sky, thereby reviving theearth after it is dead. Surely in this there are signsfor a people who understand. Space and the earthare firm by His command; then when He calls you, ~ 12 ~
  • 12. A Treasury of The Qur’an IN SPACE AND ON EARTHsuddenly, from the earth you shall emerge. To Himbelongs everything in the heavens and on earth; allare obedient to Him. He it is who originatescreation, then reproduces it, and it is easier for Him,His is the loftiest likeliness in space and on earth. He is the Mighty, the Wise. (30:17-27) ~ 13 ~
  • 13. A Treasury of The Qur’an THE COSMIC CALLTHE COSMIC CALLIt is God who splits the grain and the date stone. Hebrings forth the living from the dead, and the deadfrom the living. Such is God. How then can youturn away from Him? He splits the sky into dawn.He has made the night for a repose and the sun andthe moon for a reckoning. Such is the ordinance ofGod, the Mighty, the Wise. It is He who has createdfor you the stars, that you may be guided by themin the darkness of land and sea. We have madeplain our signs for people who understand. It is Hewho sent down water from the sky. With it Webring forth the shoot of every plant and then Wehave brought forth its green leaf and from it close-compounded grain; and out of the date-palm, fromits pollen, dates thick-clustered, ready to the hand;and gardens of grapes, olives and pomegranates, like and unlike one another. Look upon their fruitswhen they fructify and ripen. Surely in all this aresigns for people who believe. Yet they ascribe aspartners unto Him the jinn, though He createdthem, and they impute unto Him sons anddaughters without any knowledge. Glory be to Himand exalted be He above what they describe. • 14. A Treasury of The Qur’an THE COSMIC CALLCreator of the heavens and the earth. How can Hehave a son, when there is for Him no consort; whenHe created all things and He has knowledge of allthings? (6:96-104) ~ 15 ~
  • 15. A Treasury of The Qur’an LORD OF THE GREAT THRONELORD OF THE GREAT THRONEDid you think that We created you in vain and thatyou would never be returned to Us? Exalted beGod, the true Master. There is no deity save Him,the Lord of the great throne. And whoever invokesany other deity besides God—a deity of whosedivinity he has no proof—with his Lord alone willbe his reckoning. The unbelievers shall neverprosper. And say: Lord, forgive and have mercy, forYou are the best of those that show mercy. (23:115-118) ~ 16 ~
  • 16. A Treasury of The Qur’an LOVE FOR GODLOVE FOR GODIn the creation of the heavens and the earth; in thealternation of night and day; in the ships that sailthe ocean with cargoes beneficial to men; in thewater which God sends down from the sky andwith which He revives the dead earth after itsdeath, dispersing in it all kinds of beasts; in theswirling of the winds and in the clouds that aredriven between earth and sky; surely in this thereare signs for people who understand. Yet there aresome people who choose from other beings besidesGod, as rivals to God, loving them as God aloneshould be loved - whereas those who believe loveGod more than all else. If the evil-doers could onlysee, when they behold the doom, that power lieswith God alone and that God is severe inpunishment. When those who were followeddisown their followers and they behold the doom, and their cords are cut asunder. Those whofollowed will say, “If only a return were possible forus, we would disown them, as they have disownedus.” Thus God will show them their own work asanguish for them. They shall never emerge from theFire. Mankind, eat of what is in the earth lawful and ~ 17 ~
  • 17. A Treasury of The Qur’an LOVE FOR GODwholesome, and follow not in the steps of Satan, forhe is your sworn enemy. He commands you only toevil and indecency and that you should assert aboutGod what you do not know. (2: 164-169) ~ 18 ~
  • 18. A Treasury of The Qur’an GOD’S PROPHETSGOD’S PROPHETSThose who believe and have not obscured theirbelief with wrong-doing are truly secure and theyare rightly guided. Such was the argument withwhich We furnished Abraham against his people. We raise whom We will to an exalted rank. YourLord is Wise, All-Knowing. And We gave to himIsaac and Jacob; each one We guided as We hadguided Noah before them. And of his progenyDavid and Solomon, Job and Joseph, Moses andAaron; thus We reward those who do good. AndZachariah and John, Jesus and Elias; each was ofthe Righteous. And Ishmael and Elisha, Jonahand Lot, each one We preferred above all beings. And of their fathers and of their offsprings and oftheir brethren; We elected them and guided themto a straight Path. Such is God’s guidance. Hebestows it on whom He pleases of His servants. But if they had served other gods besides Himtheir labours would have been in vain. On themWe bestowed the scriptures, wisdom andprophethood. If these disbelieve therein, then Weshall entrust them to others who are notdisbelievers. These are the ones whom God ~ 19 ~

  • 20. A Treasury of The Qur’an HEAVEN AND HELLHEAVEN AND HELLThey underrate the might of God. But on the Day ofResurrection He will hold the entire earth in Hisgrasp and fold up the skies in His right hand. Glorybe to Him! Exalted be He above all that theyassociate. The Trumpet shall be blown and whoeveris in the heavens and whoever is in the earth shallswoon, save whom God wills. Then it shall beblown a second time and they will stand and lookaround them. The earth will shine with the light ofits Lord and the Book will be set in place. Theprophets and witnesses shall be brought in and allshall be judged with fairness: none shall bewronged. Each soul shall be paid in full for what ithas wrought, for He is well-aware of what they do.Then the disbelievers will be driven into Hell incompanies. When they draw near, its gates will beopened, and its keepers will say to them: “Did notmessengers come to you from among yourselves, reciting to you the signs of your Lord and warningyou of the meeting of this day?” They shall say:“Yes, indeed.” And thus the punishment which theunbelievers have been promised shall be fulfilled. Itshall be said: “Enter the gates of Hell, to dwell ~ 21 ~
  • 21. A Treasury of The Qur’an HEAVEN AND HELLtherein forever.” Evil is the dwelling-place of thearrogant. Then those who feared their Lord shall beled into heaven in companies to Paradise. Whenthey draw near, its gates will be opened and itskeepers shall say: “Peace be upon you! Well youhave done. Enter Paradise and dwell thereinforever.” They will say: “Praise be to God, Who hasbeen true to His promise to us and has made usinherit the land, that we may dwell wherever wewish in Paradise.” How excellent is the wage ofthose that labour. And you will see the angelsencircling about the Throne, hymning the praises oftheir Lord. Mankind will be judged with fairnessand it will be said: “Praise be to God, Lord of theWorlds.” (39:67-75) ~ 22 ~
  • 22. A Treasury of The Qur’an PRAYERSPRAYERSPerform the prayers at sunset, at nightfall and atdawn; the dawn prayer is witnessed. And pray for apart of the night, an additional duty for you; it maybe that your Lord will raise you up to anhonourable station. (17:78-79)Be constant in praying at the beginning and the endof the day, and in the night too. Good deeds makeamends for sins. That is a reminder for the mindful. Therefore have patience; God will not leave towaste the reward of the righteous. (11:114-115)And when you have performed the prayer, remember God, standing, sitting and lying down. Then, when you are secure, perform the prayer, forprayer is a duty incumbent on the faithful, to beobserved at appointed hours. (4:103) ~ 23 ~
  • 23. A Treasury of The Qur’an PRAYERSRecite what has been revealed to you of the Book, and perform the prayer; prayer prevents indecencyand the evil. God’s remembrance is greatest of all.And God knows what you do. (29:45)Be ever mindful of prayers, and of the midmostprayer. And stand obedient to God. (2:238) ~ 24 ~
  • 24. A Treasury of The Qur’an FASTINGFASTINGBelievers, fasting is prescribed for you, as it wasprescribed for those before you, so that you mayward off evil. Fast a certain number of days; but ifany of you be sick or on a journey, then a similarnumber of other days, and it is incumbent uponthose who can afford it to make sacrifice by feedinga needy person. Yet it is better for him who doesgood of his own accord; and that you should fast isbetter for you, if you but knew it. In the month ofRamadan the Qur’an was revealed, a guidance formankind with clear proofs of guidancedistinguishing right from wrong. So those of youwho witness the month should fast it. But anyonewho is sick or on a journey may fast a similarnumber of other days. God desires ease for you, nothardship. He desires you to fulfill the number andmagnify God for having guided you and He wishesyou to render thanks. (2:183-186) ~ 25 ~
  • 25. A Treasury of The Qur’an ALMS-GIVINGALMS-GIVINGBelievers, spend of that with which We haveprovided you, before there comes a day whenthere shall be neither trading, nor friendship norintercession. Truly it is the unbelievers who arethe wrongdoers. (2:254)He who spends his wealth in the way of God islike a grain of corn that sprouts seven ears, inevery ear a hundred grains. God gives abundanceto whom He wills; God is munificent and all-knowing. Those who spend their wealth in theway of God then do not follow up what theyspend with reproach and injury shall be rewardedby their Lord; they shall have nothing to fear orregret. A kind word with forgiveness is betterthan almsgiving followed by injury, God is self-sufficient and clement. Believers, do not mar youralmsgiving with reproach and injury, like thosewho spend their wealth only to be seen andpraised by people, and believe neither in God norin the Last Day. Such people are like a rock ~ 26 ~
  • 26. A Treasury of The Qur’an ALMS-GIVINGcovered with a little earth; a shower falls upon itand leaves it hard and bare. They shall gainnothing from their works. God does not guide theunbelievers. But those who give away their wealthfrom a desire to please God and strengthen theirsouls are like a garden on a hillside; if a rainstormfalls upon it, it yields up twice its normal crop;and if no rain falls upon it, it is watered by thedew. God sees what you do. Would any of you, being a man well-advanced in age with helplesschildren to support, wish to have his garden—agarden planted with palm-trees, vines and allmanner of fruits, and watered by runningstreams—blasted and consumed by a fierywhirlwind? Thus God makes plain to you Hisrevelation, so that you may give thought.Believers, give in alms of the wealth you havelawfully earned and of that which We Havebrought out of the earth for you; not of worthlessthings which you yourselves would onlyreluctantly accept. Know that God is self-sufficientand glorious. Satan threatens you with povertyand bids you unto indecency. But God promisesyou His forgiveness and bounty. God ismunificent and all-knowing. He gives wisdom to ~ 27 ~

  • 28. A Treasury of The Qur’an PILGRIMAGEPILGRIMAGEPerform the pilgrimage and visit the Sacred Housefor God’s sake. If you are prevented, send suchofferings as you can afford, and do not shave yourheads until the offerings have reached theirdestination. But if any of you is ill or suffers from anailment of the head, he must pay a ransom either byfasting or by almsgiving or by offering a sacrifice. Inpeacetime if any of you combines the visit with thepilgrimage he must make such offerings as he canafford; but if he lacks the means let him fast threedays during the pilgrimage and seven when he hasreturned; that is, ten days in all. That is for himwhose family are not present at the Holy Mosque.Have fear of God: Know that He is stern inretribution. Pilgrimage is in the appointed months.Whoever intends to perform it in those monthsmust abstain from sexual intercourse, obscencelanguage and acrimonious disputes while onpilgrimage. God is aware of whatever good you do.Provide yourselves well; the best provision is piety.Fear Me, then, you that are endowed withunderstanding. It is no offence for you to seek thebounty of your Lord by trading. When you press on ~ 29 ~
  • 29. A Treasury of The Qur’an PILGRIMAGEfrom ‘Arafat remember God as you approach theSacred Monument. Remember Him who gave youguidance when you were in error. Then press onfrom where people press on, and implore theforgiveness of God. He is forgiving and merciful. And when you have fulfilled your holy ritesremember God as you remember your fathers or yetmore devoutly. There are some who say: “Lord, give us abundance in this world.” These shall haveno share in the world to come. But there are otherswho say: “Lord, give us what is good both in thisworld and in the next and save us from the doom ofHell.” These shall have a share of the reward. Swiftis the reckoning of God. Remember God during theappointed days. He that departs on the second dayincurs no sin, nor does he who stays longer, if hetruly fears God. Have fear of God, then, and knowthat you shall be gathered before Him. (2:196:203) ~ 30 ~
  • 30. A Treasury of The Qur’an SACRIFICESACRIFICEFor every nation We have appointed a holy rite thatthey may pronounce the name of God over thebeasts which He has given them for food. Your Godis One God; so surrender to Him. And give goodnews to the humble, whose hearts tremble with aweat the mention of God; who endure theirmisfortunes with fortitude, attend to their prayersand spend of that which We have bestowed onthem. And as for the sacrifice of cattle, We haveordained it for you as one of the symbols set up byGod. They are of much use to you. So pronounceGod’s name over them as you draw them up in lineand slaughter them; and when they have fallendown, eat of their flesh, and feed with it the poorperson and the beggar. So We have subjected themto you that you may be thankful. Their flesh andblood does not reach God; it is your piety thatreaches Him. So He has subjected them to you, thatyou may magnify God for having guided you. Andgive good news to the righteous. (22:34-37) ~ 31 ~
  • 31. A Treasury of The Qur’an SERVING GODSERVING GODTo God belongs all that the heavens and the earthcontain. Whether you reveal your thoughts or hidethem, God will bring you to account for them. Hewill forgive whom He will and punish whom Hewill; He has power over all things. The Prophetbelieves in what has been revealed to him by hisLord and so do the faithful. They all believe in Godand His angels, His scriptures and His prophets.“We make no distinction between any of Hisprophets,” they say: “We hear and We obey.Forgive us, Lord; unto You shall we return.” Goddoes not charge a soul with more than it can bear. Itshall be requited for whatever good and whateverevil it has done, “Lord do not take us to task if weforget or lapse into error. Lord, do not lay on us theburden You laid on those before us. Lord, do notcharge us with more than we can bear. Pardon us,forgive us, and have mercy on us, You alone are ourProtector. Help us against the unbelievers.” (2:284-286) ~ 32 ~
  • 32. A Treasury of The Qur’an THE SHARI’AHTHE SHARI’AHThe Lord has enjoined you to worship none butHim, and to show kindness unto parents. If eitheror both of them reach old age with you, show themno sign of impatience, nor rebuke them; but speakkindly unto them. Treat them with humility andtenderness and say: “Lord, be merciful to them evenas they cherished and reared me when I was aninfant.” Your Lord knows best what is in yourhearts. If you are righteous, He is Forgiving to thosewho turn to Him again and again. Give to the nearof kin their due, and also to the destitute and to thewayfarers. Do not squander your substancewastefully, for the wasteful are Satan’s brothers;and Satan is ever ungrateful to his Lord. But if,while waiting for your Lord’s bounty, then at leastspeak to them kindly. Be neither miserly norprodigal, for then you should either be reproachedor reduced to penury. Your Lord gives abundantlyto whom He wills and sparingly to whom Hepleases. He knows and observes His servants. Slaynot your children for fear of want. We will providefor them and for you. To kill them is a great sin. Donot approach adultery, for it is an indecent and evil ~ 33 ~
  • 33. A Treasury of The Qur’an THE SHARI’AHway. Do not slay any person whom God hasforbidden you to kill except for a just cause. Ifsomeone is slain unjustly, to his heir We have giventhe right of retaliation. But let him not carry hisvengeance too far, for his victim in turn will beassisted and avenged. Do not interfere with theproperty of orphans except with the best of motives, until they reach maturity. Keep your promises; youare accountable for all that you promise. Give fullmeasure when you measure and weigh with evenscales; that is fair and better in the end. Do notpursue what you do not know; man’s eyes, ears andheart—each of his senses will be closely questioned.Do not walk in the earth with haughty self-conceit;you cannot cleave the earth, nor can you rival themountains in stature. All this is evil; odious in thesight of your Lord. These injunctions are but a partof the wisdom with which your Lord has inspiredyou. Do not appoint another god with God, or youwill be cast into Hell, reproached and rejected. (17:23-39) ~ 34 ~
  • 34. A Treasury of The Qur’an THE SERVANTS OF THE MERCIFULTHE SERVANTS OF THE MERCIFULThe true servants of the Merciful are those whowalk upon the earth modestly and say: “Peace!” tothe ignorant who address them; who pass the nightstanding and prostrate in adoration of their Lord;who say: “Lord ward off from us the punishment ofHell, for its punishment is everlasting, an evildwelling and an evil resting place”; who, when theyspend, are neither wasteful nor niggardly, but keepthe golden mean; who invoke no other god besidesGod, and do not kill save for a just cause; who donot commit adultery. He that does this shall meetwith evil: his punishment shall be doubled on theDay of Resurrection and in disgrace he shall abideforever—unless he repent and believe and do goodworks, for then God will change his sins to goodactions; God is Forgiving and Merciful: he thatrepents and does good works truly returns to God;who do not bear false witness and when they passby idle talk, pass by with dignity; who do not turn ablind eye and a deaf ear to the revelations of theirLord when they are reminded of them; who say:“Lord, give us joy in our spouses and offspring, andmake us examples to those who are God-fearing.” ~ 35 ~
  • 35. A Treasury of The Qur’an THE SERVANTS OF THE MERCIFULThese shall be rewarded with the highest heaven fortheir patient endurance. There they shall bewelcomed with a greeting and peace, and there theyshall abide forever; a blessed dwelling and a blessedresting place. (25:63-76) ~ 36 ~
  • 36. A Treasury of The Qur’an TRUST IN GODTRUST IN GODThere is but one God. In Him let the believers puttheir trust. Believers, you have an enemy in yourspouses and children: beware of them. But if youoverlook their offences and forgive and pardonthem, then know that God is Forgiving andMerciful. Your wealth and children are but atemptation. God’s reward is great. Therefore fearHim as far as you are able and be attentive, obedient and charitable for the good of your ownselves; for those who are guarded from their ownavarice will surely prosper. If you give God agenerous loan, He will repay you twofold and willforgive you, for God is Ever Responsive to gratitudeand Most Forbearing. (64:13-18) ~ 37 ~
  • 37. A Treasury of The Qur’an WORDS OF WISDOMWORDS OF WISDOMLuqman admonished his son: “My son,” he said,“do not associate other with God; to associateother with God is a mighty sin.” We havecharged man concerning his parents, for withmuch pain his mother bears him and he is notweaned before he is two years of age. Givethanks to Me and to your parents. To Me allthings shall return. But if they press you toassociate with Me, what you know nothing of,then obey them not. Be kind to them in thisworld, but follow the way of him who turns tome.
