Using Google Sketchup In The Technology Classroom

 1. 1. Using Google Sketchup in the Technology Classroom
 2. 2. What is Sketchup?

3D modeling software

Inexpensive

Easy to learn

 3. 3. How will it be used in Stimson?

All 8 th grade Technology classes learn technical drawing

Used to expand technical drawing knowledge

 4. 4. How will it be used in Stimson?

During the drawing unit the 8 th grade students design and construct their own air powered car

This program will allow students to complete their final designs on the computer

 5. 5. How will it be used in Stimson?

Because this is a 3D modeling program the students will be able to take a concept sketch and turn it into a 3D model on the computer

 6. 6. Why is Sketchup needed?

Even though Sketchup is not necessarily use in industry, it will give students the basic understanding of how three dimensional modeling works

 7. 7. Other materials required

Each class will need to use the computer lab for a minimum of one week

Grants can be written to get laptop carts for the technology department

Laptops can be used for many aspects of the technology curriculum

 8. 8. Future Growth

Eventually the technical drawing unit will be expanded into the 7 th grade curriculum

This will allow more time to be spent on the more advanced drawing in the 8 th grade

 9. 9. Future Growth

If more hardware is eventually purchased, students might be allowed to design a product (ruler, car, etc…) than be able watch CNC machines construct it
