Acceptable worship Acceptable worship Presentation Transcript

  • What is Acceptable Worship?
  • Early SDA Church
    • "I saw singing to the glory of God often drove away the enemy, and shouting would beat him back and give us the victory" (Letter 8a, 1850).
  • The Bible says:
    • Psalm 95: 1
    • “ Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us SHOUT joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.”
    • Psalm 100
    • “ Make a joyful SHOUT to the Lord, all you lands!”
    • Church services in the early SDA Church were energetic!!
    • While Church Pioneer James White sang, he used his Bible as a drum to play the beat of the song! *
    • Why didn’t he just buy a drum?
    • Poverty prevented many from buying luxuries, and a drum was definitely a luxury!
    • * William A Spicer. Pioneer Days of the Adventist Movement. p147
    • Opposition to instruments new to the church is nothing new:
    • … the organ, so much approved of today in church, was considered the devil's musical instrument by some SDAs. JN Loughborough and other church leaders had to introduce biblical arguments to ease the acceptance of the first organ used by Adventists in California. ( Ministry Oct 1991, p12). Please note, the Bible does NOT mention organs! The admonition to bring all the instruments into the house of God was probably used to persuade people to accept the organ.
  • Early SDA Church
    • At one church service, the meeting was at a substantial volume, so loud in fact, that the local sheriff arrived to arrest the meeting leader for disturbing the peace!
    • Ellen Harmon was present at this same meeting, and said, “the power of God was there.”
    • (Spiritual Gifts vol 2 pages 40-41).
    • Despite energetic services, Sister White said:
    • "I saw there was great necessity of more energy being manifested by the commandment keepers in their meetings" (EGW Manuscript 3, 1853 -- Manuscript Releases vol 5 page 424). Notice that this direction to have "more energy" was given at a time when services were energetic services. If giving this direction to the SDA Church today, you would need to say "far more energy!"
  • Early SDA Church
    • Adventists took the melody of some of the most popular songs (even dance songs) of the day and changed the lyrics!
    • “ Way Down Upon the Suwanee River” became, “You will See Your Lord a-coming”
    • “ Dixie” became a song about the Advent Hope
    • Bonny Eloise became “How Sweet are the Tidings that Greet a Pilgrim’s Ear”
    • The pioneers would probably be SHOCKED that many Adventist churches play these same songs today, especially because today’s music sounds drastically different from these early church songs. Expecting people in today’s society to adjust their musical tastes backwards hundreds of years is UNREASONABLE!
    • Playing only soft, gentle, slow music is NOT indicative of holiness!
    • Psalm 150:3-5 reads:
    • Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with drum and dance ; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals .
    • God is NOT against percussion – He loves it! In fact, Lucifer, the worship leader, has percussion instruments as part of his anatomy!!
    • Ezekiel 28:13 (NKJ version)
    • You were in Eden, the garden of God;       Every precious stone was your covering:       The sardius, topaz, and diamond,       Beryl, onyx, and jasper,       Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold.        The workmanship of your timbrels (drums) and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created.
    • God created rhythm!
    • Part of the brain listens to melody and part listens to rhythm. Music just isn’t as good without hearing the rhythm that drums provide!
    • Some people think only music played in a certain style is acceptable to God, but the Bible says:
    • "Sing a new song to the Lord." Psalm 98:1
    • Should the NEW song be in an OLD STYLE? Language, technology, clothing, etc. constantly change, and musical styles and instruments do, too! Heaven has the MOST CONTEMPORARY MUSIC EVER!
    • In the thousands of years of earth’s history, there have been innumerable songs written to praise God, written with varying musical styles, tempos, and instruments. God did NOT put a blueprint in the Bible stating only certain tempos, instruments, and styles are acceptable in worship.
Creation Present Day SDA Church Hymnal Flood Resurrection It is PREPOSTEROUS to think that only music written in the same style as music in the SDA Church Hymnal is acceptable praise to the Creator!
    • The music in the hymnal as commonly played (piano and organ) is very formal and stilted to the ears of people accustomed to guitars and syncopation. Worshipers should not be forced to adjust their musical tastes backwards hundreds of years.
    • "The evil of formal worship cannot be too strongly depicted" (Testimonies vol 9 page 143).
    • Ellen White warned that vigilance was required to make sure we did not slip into false worship styles. "The worship of God will become corrupted unless there are wide-awake men at every post of duty" (Testimonies vol 4 517). However, there has been almost no attempt to maintain the Biblical worship style in the SDA Church since her death. We have allowed our worship style to drift and to eventually become formal. And we now have virtually no congregational involvement.
    • Today’s SDA CHURCH
    • No shouting/enthusiasm
    • Very quiet
    • Formal
    • Emotionless
    • Old music still played the same way as written 150 – 200 years ago.
    • No wonder the SDA church in North America is at a standstill!
    • People against contemporary music reference this quote from Sister White to refute using drums and updated music in church:
    • “ The things you have described as taking place in Indiana, the Lord has shown me would take place just before the close of probation. Every uncouth thing will be demonstrated. There will be shouting, with drums, music, and dancing. The senses of rational beings will become so confused that they cannot be trusted to make right decisions. And this is called the moving of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit NEVER reveals itself in such methods, in such a bedlam of noise.”
    • But they fail to read the background of her statement!
    • This is copied directly from the Ellen G. White Estate:
    • EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS REPORT THAT IN THEIR SERVICES THE FANATICS WORKED UP A HIGH PITCH OF EXCITEMENT BY USE OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS SUCH AS ORGANS, FLUTES, FIDDLES, TAMBOURINES, HORNS, AND EVEN A BIG BASS DRUM. THEY SOUGHT A PHYSICAL DEMONSTRATION AND SHOUTED AND PRAYED AND SANG UNTIL SOMEONE IN THE CONGREGATION WOULD FALL, PROSTRATE AND UNCONSCIOUS, FROM HIS SEAT. ONE OR TWO MEN, WALKING UP AND DOWN THE AISLE FOR THE PURPOSE, WOULD DRAG THE FALLEN PERSON UP ON THE ROSTRUM. THEN ABOUT A DOZEN INDIVIDUALS WOULD GATHER AROUND THE PROSTRATE BODY, SOME SINGING, SOME SHOUTING, AND SOME PRAYING, ALL AT THE SAME TIME . WHEN THE SUBJECT REVIVED, HE WAS COUNTED AMONG THOSE WHO HAD PASSED THROUGH THE GETHSEMANE EXPERIENCE, HAD OBTAINED HOLY FLESH, AND HAD TRANSLATION FAITH. [emphasis mine]
    • People were shouting, singing, praying, preaching, and playing music ALL AT THE SAME TIME! No wonder Sister White called it a bedlam of noise! The service had to be extremely confusing! God is a God of order, and expects us to use our sense of reason to worship Him. Contemporary music does NOT make anyone lose their sense of reason!
  • Let’s look closer at one sentence in the previous quote from Sister White: “ There will be shouting, with drums, music, and dancing.” This is NOT A NEGATIVE STATEMENT! If we are to use this statement to rule out shouting (or drums), we must also rule out music because it is included in the same list with the same status.
    • Even though SDAs do not dance in church, the Bible repeatedly encourages us to praise God with worshipful dance:
    • Psalm 149:3: “Let them praise his Name in the DANCE: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp!”
    • 2 Samuel 6:14: “And David DANCED before the LORD with all his might!”
    • In heaven, we will dance!
    • Jeremiah 31:13: “Then shall the virgin rejoice in the DANCE, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow!”
    • When the redeemed finally enter into heaven, God Himself will sing AND DANCE with joy!
    • “ The LORD your God is with you,        He is mighty to save.        He will take great delight in you,        He will quiet you with his love,        He will rejoice [yagil – to spin around] over you with singing."
    • Sister White spoke favorably of dancing to exalt God and remember Him:
    • The music and dancing in joyful praise to God at the removal of the ark had not the faintest resemblance to the dissipation of modern dancing . The one tended to the remembrance of God and exalted His holy name. The other is a device of Satan to cause men to forget God and to dishonor Him. {The Adventist Home 517.1}
    • We are NOT to be ruled by our emotions, but joy and happiness are the natural result of praising and appreciating the Creator of heaven and earth! Why do we stifle these expressions of enjoyment when God repeatedly tells us to shout for joy, praise Him with the drum and dance, and praise Him with all kinds of instruments?
