  • 2. Here are a some myths about skin cancer that you need toknow to ensure that you are providing yourself themaximum amount of protection as necessary against skincancer. Before you go out into the sun you shouldconsider these myths and facts:Tanning Beds are Safer than the SunStudies indicate that tanning beds may be worse thangoing out into the sun. Some research indicates that 20minutes of exposure in a tanning bed is roughly equivalentto four hours in the sun. Tanning beds also use UVA raysversus UVB rays and some research indicates that UV-Aactually penetrates deeper into the skin than UV-B. Thiscan increase the risk of skin cancer and weaken thebodys immune system.
  • 3. Wearing Sunscreen at the Beach is Protection Photo Courtesy of babykrul at www.sxc.huOf course wearing sunscreen at the beach is protectionbut you also need to consider other situations when youneed to be protected. The first is on cloudy days. Studiesindicate that about 85 percent of UV rays can even make itthrough on cloudy days and this means they can still dodamage. You are also at risk anytime you are outside likein the car, walking the dog or letting your children out toplay at any time of year - even when youre not at thebeach. You will also find that sunscreen will wear off withsweat and water and should always be applied everycouple hours or after getting wet.
  • 4. Taking Care Of Your Skin Now Will Protect YouThis one may be nothing you can do about now. Someresearch indicates that skin cancer can take 20 or moreyears to develop. Some of these studies also indicate thatmost people receive about 80 percent of their lifetime sunexposure before the age of 18. So unfortunately that oneday you were burned as a child increased your risk ofgetting skin cancer later on in life. Taking better care nowwill reduce the risk, but not eliminate the damage alreadydone. You should also make sure you do a good job atprotecting your children when they go out into the sun.
  • 5. Having a Tan Means Youre More ProtectedUnfortunately tanned skin is damaged skin. So when youkeep getting tanned, you just keep injuring your skin andthis potentially increases the risk of getting skin cancer. So you want to ensure that you protect yourself and yourfamily from exposure to the sun. You should definitely limityour and your familys exposure to the sun especiallyinfants. You should check your skin for early signs ofdamage and use a high SPF sunscreen. You should applythis 30 minutes prior to exposure and after every couple ofhours. Also make sure you teach your children thehazards of being out in the sun.
