  4. 4. Trash Hurts Animals <ul><li>Animals eat trash that can hurt them. </li></ul><ul><li>Animals get stuck in trash and can’t get out. </li></ul>

  7. 7. Trash Hurts Our Environment <ul><li>Trash pollutes land, air, and water. </li></ul><ul><li>Trash ruins animals’ habitats. </li></ul><ul><li>It piles up in landfills. </li></ul><ul><li>Makes the outdoors ugly </li></ul>
  8. 8. Trash Facts <ul><li>About 3 ½ pounds of solid waste are thrown away everyday for every person in the United States. </li></ul><ul><li>Every year, each household throws away about 1 ton of garbage. </li></ul><ul><li>In many communities, garbage is dumped into the ocean. </li></ul>

  11. 11. Do you go shopping with your mom or dad? Do you take your items home in a plastic or paper sack?

Plastic Bags <ul><li>Made of toxic chemicals that poison plants and animals </li></ul><ul><li>When they are burned, they give off poisonous fumes. </li></ul><ul><li>Plastic sacks don’t biodegrade. </li></ul><ul><li>If you left one outside, it would stay there unchanged for hundreds of years. </li></ul><ul><li>Every year, most families throw away about 88 pounds of plastic. </li></ul><ul><li>Some cities have banned plastic bags. </li></ul><ul><li>Some stores charge to use plastic. </li></ul>
  13. 13. Heber Hunt’s Plastic Sack Use <ul><li>In one month, we collected 42,587 sacks! </li></ul>
  14. 14. Recycle Your Plastic Sacks! -You can still take your bags to Wal-Mart. -Put them in their recycling bins. -Do not throw them away!

Paper Bags <ul><li>Paper bags are made from trees. </li></ul><ul><li>More than 900 million trees are cut down each year to provide materials to make paper. </li></ul><ul><li>Every year, a forest the size of Maine is cut down to make paper for the US. </li></ul><ul><li>Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees and 7,000 gallons of water. </li></ul><ul><li>Paper makes up over half of all trash. </li></ul>

Reusable Bags <ul><li>You can get many uses from reusable bags. </li></ul><ul><li>Will create less trash </li></ul><ul><li>More groceries fit in these bags. </li></ul><ul><li>Easier to carry </li></ul><ul><li>Stronger than plastic </li></ul><ul><li>Made of natural and recycled materials </li></ul><ul><li>Stores are persuading people to use them. </li></ul><ul><li>Many stores will replace worn out reusable bags with new ones. </li></ul>

Reusable Bags <ul><li>You will get your own reusable bags today! </li></ul><ul><li>Every time you go to the store, take your bag in. </li></ul><ul><li>Be responsible and use the reusable bag instead of plastic or paper. </li></ul><ul><li>Keep it in your car so you have it handy. </li></ul><ul><li>Remind your parents to take it in and use it. </li></ul>
