Business Model and Sustainability: Europeana.eu provides both cultural and economic value • Short term economic value intangible but cultural value high • Long term the economic potential helps balance books but not to cover €2.5-3.5 • million running costs per year Project funding creates the operational service but will not sustain it • Business model is therefore mixed –structural funding and revenue generation. • Revenue generation happens when service has eyeballs. • PARTNER PARTNER PARTNER LOGO LOGO LOGO

Europeana next 2 years 4 new content provision projects : EuropeanaLocal, EFG, Athena and APEnet Supported by co funding of €300,000 from the Netherlands Ministry of Culture, Education and Science and €72,500 from the Italian MiBAC 6 new projects starting early 2009 including: Europeana v.1.0 and EuropeanaConnect Supported by co funding from Ministries of Culture and Education in Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, Netherlands, Spain a fully operational service within 2 years With help from the Ministries of Culture and Education in Europe to solve the issue of co-funding and hosting costs PARTNER PARTNER PARTNER LOGO LOGO LOGO
    17. The EDL Foundation Purpose: • to provide cross-domain access to Europe’s cultural heritage. The Foundation will: • facilitate formal agreement across museums, archives, audio- visual archives and libraries on how to cooperate in the delivery and sustainability of a joint portal. • provide a legal framework for use by the EU for funding purposes and as a springboard for future governance.     21. Board of Participants Proposal Participants can be: A. European Associations (legal entities) of Content Holders B. International Associations (legal entities) for the benefit of a European branch (non legal entities) of this association C. Natural persons for the benefit of an association for one of the Domains, which is not a legal entity. D. Existing/Founding members of the Board of Participants and the hosting organisation (BnF, INA, BNS, BA, KB) E.     22. Council of Content Providers & Aggregators (CCPA) Participants can be: A. Content Providers, individual institutions B. Associations of Content Providers C. Aggregators (on all levels and all domains) o 5 people/institutions to be elected to the Board of Participants from the Council of Content Providers & Aggregators (1 per Domain and 1 aggregator) o The CCPA will convene at least 1x per annum for a general assembly o The CCPA can form Working Groups on specific topics and themes to advise the EDLF and associated projects o Members of the CCPA will actively be invited to participate in associated projects PARTNER PARTNER PARTNER LOGO LOGO LOGO
    23. Commission Funding & Orientation Group Participants can be: A. Representatives of Member States that contribute to the EDLF B. Representatives of European Commission o The Commission Funding & Orientation Group will advise the EDL Foundation on strategic and budget issues o The EDL Exec. Committee will inform Commission Funding & Orientation Group on what is being done with the money and the strategy o The Commission Funding & Orientation Group will be chaired by the Commission o The Commission Funding & Orientation Group to convene around Member State Expert Group meetings o The Commission Funding & Orientation Group made up of member states paying for Europeana PARTNER PARTNER PARTNER LOGO LOGO LOGO
