  2. 2. Kindergarten Objectives• What? The students will perform and explore a steady beat through: playing classroom instruments• How? By performing the song “Aiken Drum”• Why? In order to explore basic rhythmic elements7/09
  3. 3. The Man in the Moon• Is there really a man in the moon? When one looks up at the full moon, it appears to have the image of a person’s face on it’s surface. What causes this?• One can get a closer look at the moon’s surface by using powerful binoculars. High mountains and deep craters, the most spectacular of the lunar landscape’s features, are best seen during one of the moon’s phases when the sunlight is being reflected at an angle.• Because the moon rotates only once on its axis every time it orbits the earth, we always see the same side and the same features. During ten orbits in 1968, the far side of the moon was first seen by astronauts of the Apollo 9 moon mission. 7/09

Many songs that are folk songs can have different versions- different melodies, different words, and different rhythms.• During this lesson we are going to listen to and perform different versions of this song. We are also going to create our own version of Aiken Drum by making up new words for the song! 7/09
