  • We are often asked about foreclosure rates given declining sales and prices. Foreclosure rates are up in some markets that have been hot housing markets…Miami’s rate is up 80% since the 2 nd quarter and is now tied for the highest rate with Dallas of the 15 largest. Other markets with high rates in the 3 rd quarter include Las Vegas at 87. Interestingly, Baltimore metro’s rate is slightly lower than Washington at 5 per 10,000 HH

    11. 11. OMB Guidance on Place-based policies Place-based policies leverage investments by focusing resources in targeted places and drawing on the compounding effect of well-coordinated action. Effective place-based policies can influence how rural and metropolitan areas develop, how well they function as places to live, work, operate a business, preserve heritage, and more . Such policies can also streamline otherwise redundant and disconnected programs.
    12. 12. A ‘regional approach’ Many important challenges demand a regional approach. The Nation is increasingly a conglomeration of regional economies and ecosystems that should be approached as such. Federal investments should promote planning and collaboration across jurisdictional boundaries.
    13. 13. HUD’s New Direction … HUD’s central mission - ensuring that every American has access to decent, affordable housing - cannot be achieved in a vacuum. For all our housing challenges today, I believe that goal can be realized - but only in the broader context of housing, transportation, and energy costs and choices that American families experience each day in cities, suburbs and rural areas. US HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan June 16, 2009
    14. 14. Livable Communities Act S. 1618 The Livable Communities Act of 2009 A bill to establish the Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities, to establish the Interagency Council on Sustainable Communities, to establish a comprehensive planning grant program, to establish a sustainability challenge grant program, and for other purposes. Introduced August 6, 2009
    15. 15. CLEAN-TEA S. 575 HR. 1329 Clean Low-Emission Affordable New Transportation Efficiency Act A bill to amend title 49, United States Code, to develop plans and targets for States and metropolitan planning organizations to develop plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector, and for other purposes. Introduced March, 2009
    16. 16. Transportation Reauthorization Introduced in the House in concept form. No version offered yet in the Senate. House draft moves in the right direction, but does not meet demand for transit funding, joint consideration of transportation and land use, alternate modes, etc. There is time to influence the outcome! See www.transportationforamerica.org.
