Anxious Mirrors
Anxious Mirrors-------------------
I was adrift in anxious mirrors
With voices asking me to change
The magnitude of my ears
But everyone else around me
Thought it was completely strange.
But they didn't have to live with them
They didn't understand my plight
I remember trying to cover them up
Under long hair and baseball caps
But they seemed to grow bigger overnight.
I remember feeling so fearfully depressed
While guilt kept me from the front door
Unable to break the obsession
That halted me from loving
The person I still adore.
I even masked it through surgery
But none of it could ever fool
The inner perception
That was tagged onto me
From the cruel gates of school.
However I'm slowly confronting
My insecurities without using camouflage
And the impulses are gradually fading
To when I now pass a mirror
My ears never seem that large.

Dysmorphia Dysmorphia Stolen years you brought with anxiety and pain, Broken dreams and tear drops you caused by the shame. A longing to be accepted, made impossible by your grasp, A prayer at my bedside that tomorrow would be the last. Hurt inside kept hidden from view, Perhaps someone could've saved me if they only knew. Instead I battled on, foolhardy and naive, that somehow it was the something 'physically' wrong with me. But it is today that I have decided to stop wasting the days, that God does exist and he indeed works in mysterious ways. A test harder than any I've faced in the past, I need to stand tall and vow that today is the last day that I allow myself to suffer and dwell, and instead break the chains and escape from this hell. Fixated My mirror told me I'm not what I see. I'm an imaginative figure that's not the real me. A stranger I don't trust, and fear. Distorted, and unclear. Unable to truly see who I am. I settle to become what I assume. Letting this glass monster consume. Fixated. I can't leave this spot. Struggling to catch a glimpse of the person I forgot. Author unknown Claire Rachael Pitt 2008

Hall of Mirrors by Mrs Hilary Street- I live in a hall with mirrors on the wall, mirrors at every turn to point the way. I move and laugh and talk, sit silent or walk, grave, frenzied, gay. Oh, mirrors, be silent, give me some peace to be and grow. How, lest you cease awhile, shall I ever come to know? Mirrors, I am tired, I can glance and gaze no more. Leave me some space to search awhile, unwatched and unreflected. Have I not pranced and derided, panicked, been serene, frolicked and glided, even wept? Is it not enough? The lights are dim, the tempo beyond control, the dancers mad. In another moment it will be too late, I cannot wait. Mirrors, before it is too late, though I love you as myself and own you as my fate, for a moment out of time close your eyes and stop the music; still the dancing, hush the rhyme, and let me be. " The Broken Mirror: Understanding and Treating Body Dysmorphic Disorder" by Katharine Phillips (Oxford University Press)
A highly recommended book written for sufferers. This book is the most comprehensive and up-to-date source on BDD and its treatment. The treatment sections of this book (and other sections) were updated in 2005 and now provide more detailed information about the treatment of BDD.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder: A Treatment Manual (John Wiley & Sons Ltd)
This book is a treatment manual for BDD using cognitive behaviour therapy and contains a chapter on pharmacotherapy. Detailed client handouts and information will make it accessible to a wide range of professionals.
"The BDD Workbook: Overcome Body Dysmorphic Disorder and End Body Image Obsessions by James Claiborn and Cherry Pedrick (Airlift book company)
Provides a programme of support and relief for sufferers of BDD. An excellent section on relapse prevention and Mindfulness.
"The Feeling Good Handbook" by David D. Burns (Penguin Books)
Recommended by various professionals at Priory Hospitals as being one of the best CBT self-help books available. It is very in depth and whilst not dealing directly with BDD, it covers Depression, Anxiety, Social Phobia and various other related illnesses. This book may support you if you are going to, or are already having CBT.
"Feeling Good about the Way You Look: A Program for Overcoming Body Image Problems" by Sabine Wilhelm (The Guilford Press)
Step-by-step guideline, and self-assessment tool
"Suicide Junkie" by Steve Westwood (Chipmunkapublishing) 'Suicide Junkie' is an honest account of what it is like to live with body dysmorphic disorder, borderline personality disorder and severe depression. It looks at how someone can become almost addicted to suicide attempts and self harming acts and how they are or are not helped by the mental health system.
"10 Days to Great Self-esteem" by Dr David D. Burns
A useful book aimed at reclaiming and building up low self-esteem (a common problem of BDD sufferers). Aims to ease day-to-day Depression whilst creating a fulfilled future
