She joined the expedition at Fort Mandan in 1805 when captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark hired her husband, Toussaint Charbonneau She was the only female member of the expedition, just 15 years old when she joined the group.

Because the Western Indians had never seen a black man, his presence became a useful tool in negotiations with the tribes. His skill as a diplomat served Clark on numerous occasions. Clark freed York following the expedition.
