  • 2. What is networking?
    Business networking is the process of establishing a mutually beneficial relationship with other business people and potential clients and/or customers.

    The most important skill for effective business networking is listening; focusing on how you can help the person you are listening to rather than on how he or she can help you is the first step to establishing a mutually beneficial relationship.
  • 4. Importance of Networking
    The U.S. Department of Labor says that only about 5 percent of people obtain jobs through the "open" job market -- consisting primarily of help-wanted ads on the Internet and in print publications. Another 24 percent obtain jobs through contacting companies directly -- the cold-contact method of job-hunting. Twenty-three percent obtain jobs through such means as employment agencies, college career-services offices and executive-search firms. The remaining 48 percent , obtain their jobs through referrals -- that is word of mouth.

    One of the best sources of networking contacts for college students is the guest speakers that come to talk to your classes. These professionals are a vast untapped resource. One of our students who was interested in a career in pharmaceutical sales went up to a guest speaker from that industry after the presentation and introduced herself. She asked the pharmaceutical rep if she could send him her resume. He agreed, and she kept in touch with him throughout the next semester before she graduated. By the time she claimed her diploma, she had lined up a $40,000 a year job with the drug firm.

    "Give your resume to people. Don't ask THEM for positions, but instead ask them to pass on your resume to anyone they hear is looking for a great candidate."

    Be able to articulate what you are looking for and how others may help you. ---Too often people in conversations ask, "How may I help you?" and no immediate answer comes to mind.

    Follow through quickly and efficiently on referrals you are given. ----When people give you referrals, your actions are a reflection on them. Respect and honor that and your referrals will grow

    Call those you meet who may benefit from what you do and vice versa. ----Express that you enjoyed meeting them, and ask if you could get together and share ideas.

    Ask a question: Joining a group engaged in conversation can be awkward. The best way to do so is to pose a question to the group after getting the gist of the conversation. "You build your credibility by asking a question, and for a shy person, that's a much easier way to engage than by barging in with an opinion," he says.

    Say the person's name: "People like to hear their own name," a person's name is the sweetest sound to that person. So when you meet someone, use his name in conversation. Doing so makes the other person feel more comfortable, like you really know him and he knows you.

    Smile: "This is such a simple, basic rule, yet people just don't think about it,". They're so focused on needing to network at a conference that they don't realize they're walking around with a scowl on their face. Scowling, serious, expressions are forbidding, People are more likely to warm up to someone who says good morning with a broad smile than they are to someone with a dour

    Women are not attracted to guys that come across as insecure.  You can’t talk to women and seem like a nervous wreck and expect her to feel attraction towards you.  A woman expects a man to be powerful, confident, and secure with himself.  If she senses that you don’t possess those traits she will quickly lose attraction towards you.

    One of the major factors that will kill a woman’s attraction toward you is displaying a lack of social intelligence.  Women are social creatures.  And they blindly follow the social “norms.”  If a man doesn’t seem aware of what is socially acceptable or “cool” she will quickly dismiss him as being “below” her.  An easy way to do display a lack of social intelligence while talking to a woman is to make an inappropriate comment, not take the “cues” she is sending you, or continually tell jokes that no one finds funny.

    If you want to know how to talk to women in a way that doesn’t bore them… Avoid asking too many “interview” style questions.  Instead state your opinion about things.

    Remember:  Statements over questions.  Instead of saying “where did you grow up?”  Say “You don’t look like you grew up around here.”  This allows you to make observations about her and express your personality.

    Women want a guy who is not afraid to lead her.  While talking to a woman take control of the conversation.  Never wait for her to dictate what you’ll be talking about.

    Pay attention to the non verbal cues a woman is giving you.  If you’re standing too close to her, accidentally spitting when you talk, or making her feel uncomfortable in any way… she will send you hints.  Pay attention to them.
