– Condition of being overweight due to excessive

– Large storage of body fats leading to being overweight
– Related illnesses include kidney failure, liver disease,
hypertension.
– Key causes are excessive consumption of salt, sugar,
alcohol, processed food, red meat, etc.

• Obesity leads to lower economic productivity
and increases public health costs.
• Lower productivity
– Taking more days of leave due to obesity-related
health issues.
– Lower productivity leads to lower income .
– More sick days means less learning days, loss of
educational opportunities

• Higher public health expenditure
– Public funding needs to be channelled to
healthcare.
– Less funding for other economic areas like
industries and education.
– Chronic obesity-related health conditions like
cardiovascular disease and diabetes require long
term government funding and infrastructure
investment.

• Excessive food consumption has social
impacts like food wastage and dieting.
• Food wastage
– When there is excess food, there is less care in
handling food.
– Large amounts of food is wasted.
– Common issue in Developed Countires.
– Both food producers and food consumers throw
away food that is still edible.
– Large amount of energy gone into the food
production is also lost.
9. Dieting
• Overweight people may choose to go on a diet
to lose weight.
• A practice of regulating the amount of food
consumed in order to maintain an ideal
weight.
• Often includes some physical exercise.
• Dieting brings individual benefits. Also brings
economic benefits.
10. Dieting economy
• In 2012, the weight loss industry in USA was
valued at $20 billion.
• From publications, medication to medical
procedures.
• Weight loss industry is a major employer .
• Inappropriate dieting may cause diet-related
issues like
– Iron-deficiency anaemia, depression, etc.
