I suspect that step 1, deciding on which communities that I, as a learner, should join, is the most difficult. To make that decision you ned to be operatiing at quite a high level, that is after you acknowledge/recognise that their is value in, in terms of learning, in following/contributing/participating in social networks - networks the plural
My PLE is heavily influenced by the Communities and people I learn with - because learning is not a solo-journey, I have to make myself available where the others are present too! Adoption of social software is a chain-reaction kind of a thing. Either you sign up to the environments where others interact or you are excluding yourself of those learning and interaction opportunities.
I was asked to give this presentation on e-based personal learning spaces and on how blogs and wikis and eportfolios can be use to support reflection and presentation of learning

What’s a Blog?

What’s a wiki?
A Wiki is a webpage, or a set of web-pages, that can be easily edited and updated with relevant information by a group of people interested in a given topic. It is a quite useful tool to promote collaboration among peers.

Structured in reverse order
Personal reflection of one’s (learning) experiences
Not necessarily limited to one single topic
Connects to outside resources and audiences;* Allows interaction with its readers
Encourages free and informal discourse
Promotes the progressive development of writing skills by the publication of new posts
Can help develop a reflexive and writing culture
Wikis
Usually developed by several authors and read by many
Structured according to the organization of content
Objective and factual
Topical
Connects to external and internal resources and by a topic interested audience
Allows comments by the learning community
Encourages structured speech
Promotes a continuous re vision of the existing resources and addition of new ones
Each Personal Learning Space is different and unique
