  • 3. After Google rolled out its Panda update, I hadto make some significant changes to mywebsites. Although I had been following bestSEO practices for a while, I knew that it wasnecessary to review my websites to make surethat they fit in with the new algorithms.Despite the cute name, many people haveconsidered Panda a dangerous beast. This isbecause Panda significantly impacted the waywe all do SEO. The ostensible purpose of thePanda update was to reduce rankings for sitesthat Google considered low-quality, howeverthere was a huge uproar from manywebmasters who considered the changesunfair.
  • 4. How I Updated My SEO Practices• As a website designer, I take pride in creating websites that are high quality. However, I also understand that quality, like beauty, is something that lies in the eye of the beholder. What I may consider beautiful, aesthetic and valuable may not necessarily be what appeals to Googles search engine crawlers. This suspicion was verified when I heard about some genuine sites, sites that offered much value to human visitors, had been penalized by Google. After reviewing my websites, comparing them to what Panda considered as websites that offered human visitors high-value, I made five fundamental changes.
  • 5. How I Updated My SEO PracticesHere are the changes I made to make sure thatmy websites did not face any penalties:One, I reviewed the number of ads on mywebsites. Apparently, having too many ads ona website can hurt ranking. Google considerstoo many ads as distracting and taking awayfrom the value of the content.
  • 6. Two, I reviewed the quality of content on mywebsite. I had heard that duplicate content, auto blogging, and other practices were taboo. For this reason, I made sure that I either wroteall the content myself or hired reputablewriters to create original content for all mywebsites. I also wanted to make sure that mycontent was highly engaging, enticing visitorsto stay on the website longer-- and this is why Ispiced them up with more images and videocontent. Furthermore, in those instanceswhere I was using legitimate scrapers, relyingon other sources for published information, Imade sure that I added value to theinformation by adding my own views tosyndicated content. There are three effectiveways, I found to do this: one, add previews;two, add reviews; or three, add relevantcommentary like defining something moreclearly or expanding on an interesting point.

  • 8. Three, on those mini-sites where I had lessthan five pages of content, I added articles thatwould prove helpful for readers. I did not addthese articles all at once, but periodically sothat they could be perceived as fresh content. Iknew that Panda was targeting websites thathad insufficient pages, regardless of how wellwritten those pages might be. In addition, Imade sure that this content offered visitorsusable information. The more interestingcontent is the longer visitors will stay to readthe entire piece rather than skimming over it.A website is considered an authority site basedon its quantity, much more than how well theinformation is researched and written. Look atit this way: search engine spiders are notliterary critics. They just infer something isvaluable indirectly based on page views, quantity, visitor duration, and so on.
  • 9. Four, I made sure that my web designs offeredeasy navigation and had all the elementsnecessary to be considered user-friendly.When users can find what theyre looking forquickly and easily, then they will stay on yourwebsite longer. Google can plot how theynavigate from one page to another and howlong they stay on each page. Reducing yourbounce rate will improve your site rankings.Five, I made sure that my websites wereparticipatory; in other words, I encouragedreader engagement and content sharing. Imade sure that it was easy for visitors to sharecontent on a wide variety of social mediawebsites. This was easy to do because of thenumber of plug-ins available.
  • 10. Wrapping It UpOverall, I did what I could to improve brandbuilding. One way to do this is to getmentioned on Facebook and Twitter, as well asother social media platforms. Getting awebsite mentioned raises social awarenessand indirectly builds a brand.Today, I still continue to study what the recentPanda updates mean for website designers.Although I had done this with previousupdates, the Panda update appears to be oneof the most dramatic ones that Google hasever rolled out. It has not only precipitated aneed for making numerous changes, but it alsohas had a sweeping effect on how everyonedoes SEO from now on.
