  • These are all things that Overdrive announced at their annual conference. There isn’t a timeline but they are being worked on. The catalogue integration is something the Bibliocommons will be working on. It’s a major project so no timeline yet.

  • What is Overdrive?
    • Digital content provider since 1980s (CD-ROMs); library vendor since 2002; at OPL since 2006
    • Content licensed from publishers
    • Use of DRM (Digital Rights Management) software manages digital copyrights and terms of use

  • Downloading
    • When you get an audiobook or eBook from the library, you are a downloading a file to your computer or device
    • Every file needs a program to open it
    • For example: .doc for Microsoft Word, Adobe Reader for .pdf, Overdrive Media Console or Adobe Digital Editions for Audiobooks or eBooks

    • Ebooks vs PDFs
    • ePub: reflowable text, will reformat for your screen size, zoom level
    • PDF: static image of the page but better for image and text together

  • Audiobooks: WMA vs MP3
    • WMA (Windows Media Audio): smaller files sizes, DRM compatible, do not work on a Mac but can be transferred to Apple portable devices with a PC
    • MP3: less copy protection, can be played on Mac and Apple devices

  • For Apple devices Can I transfer OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks to an Apple® device? OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks can be transferred to Apple devices using OverDrive Media Console v3.0 (or newer) on Windows® or OverDrive Media Console for Mac®. Can I transfer OverDrive WMA Audiobooks and OverDrive WMA Music to an Apple® device? OverDrive WMA Audiobooks and OverDrive WMA Music can be transferred to Apple devices (where permitted by the publisher or record label) using OverDrive Media Console v3.2.0.5 (or newer) for Windows. OverDrive Media Console for Mac does not support OverDrive WMA titles. Can I download OverDrive titles directly to mobile devices?
