How did we do it? Old email service New email service IMAP client Export Import

How could this be done better? Old email service New email service The direct route Export Import The long way ‘round IMAP client Export Import

This is of course a trivial example… but, Why did it work?
Standardised interface
IMAP
Both services supported this interface, as did the client application
The interface was bidirectional
Standardised data format
email
Both services could parse the same data

If we were dealing with something less trivial Why wouldn’t it work?
Lack of standardised interfaces
Lack of standardised data format
ETL(aaS) becomes a big deal
to cope with impedance mismatches
But… beware bitrot on Transformation.
Target schemas may not support full range of import data set
