  • - I just want to start by saying thank you to the conference organizers, to BC Campus who sponsored my session here, and special thanks to all of those who are about to put up with me for the next hour or so. We are at the very beginning of a wonderful transformation in education, both K12 and higher ed, and I am so fortunate to be part of this with all of you here.
    - I have some suggestions for interaction tonight. We will have an Elluminate conference chat, the official backchannel where I really want to promote conversation. There will be the regular Twitter backchannel which I also want to promote. But, because of all of the possible channels, I’d like that if you would like bring something to our attention, something to add or negate, related directly to what I am saying, I’d suggest the following tag via Twitter.

  • Diaspora - sharing ‘primordial bonds of homeland” (Bonds in this case)

Social networks have always existed. However, it is only recently that we have technological affordances to connect to more people and groups, and to leverage existing and future relationships.

This is my dad, peer 21, in 1957. This is one of the very few photographs I have of my dad before the age of 40. I have thousands of photos of my kids, before they have each turned 1 year old.

I’ve often looked at this photo and thought, what if this photo had been taken in the Facebook era? This singular, isolated photo would come alive in a sense, becoming a link to many other rich experiences, lives of individuals, lifestreams. The affordances of social networks give us a sense of richness and detail where we have only previously assumed so or imagined.

  • For those of you using Twitter, this is the tag in that we’ll be using for the conference. Feel free to tweet your thoughts or questions and I’ll certainly be happy to try to get back to many of you later as I go through them. I’ll also be autotweeting resources as I go through.

  • Bring in outside expertise/conversation.

  • There are benefits in publishing to the outside world.

  • Use the Open Content available
  • Student developed/centred portfolios
  • Make your research transparent - only take a second to share.
  • Rethink traditional academic vs. public intellectual ...

  • Respect each other. Work with one another.
Dream big about our field - and make those dreams happen.
It is truly an exciting time to be an educator.
