The church at the local village level had some differences from the politically powerful national church organization. While the village church wanted to replace the authority of local lords, it was only partially successful. Monasteries were centers of wealth and learning that provided food and shelter for monks and nuns, with around 50 religious houses and 1,000 monks and nuns in England by 1066. Friars lived among the poor to bring Christianity to them, in contrast to the wealth of monasteries.
